It seems that over the tv this evening people have been saying "off of" or "for free"! It's doing my head in as we used to say-I have even started shouting at the screen. I have become my father

Re. "Quizqueen" I read recently that it is very Non-u to say "pardon" instead "what".

Madmartha Mon 28-Aug-17 19:44:14

Alexander Armstrong on Pointless needs a good slap every time he says 'we have got'. It is 'we have', Mr A, 'we have'!!!

pollyperkins Mon 28-Aug-17 20:58:14

Yes Blodwen, really posh people say What! And never Pardon. But it does sound wrong to me.
To go back to pacific and specific, I've often noticed confusion between accept and except which have completely different meanings of course. As to pronunciation (not
pronounciation which my phone has refused theee times to let me write!) - I had a music teacher at school who told us to say Allelulia ( instead of Allelujah.)

Christinefrance Mon 28-Aug-17 21:28:57

And lavatory not toilet, pudding not dessert, its a minefield being posh. grin

Free instead of three

PenJK50 Tue 29-Aug-17 17:37:37

"On the weekend" is one of my pet hates! When did "at the weekend" disappear?

JanieG Tue 29-Aug-17 18:48:14

I've thought of another! The mash up of generally and genuinely everyone seems to use these days, as in 'I geneurinly like.......'

pollyperkins Wed 30-Aug-17 18:06:05

Its also posher to say scent instead of perfume and napkin insread of serviette. Mantlepiece is wrong but I cant remember what is right!
I get round lavatory v toilet by saying loo! And is it front room, lounge, sitting room or drawing room? I say living room to try and be neutral.

granfromafar Thu 31-Aug-17 14:43:00

Like LadyO - in our local Freecycle postings you often see ' Chester draws' wanted! Grrrr!

Christinefrance Thu 31-Aug-17 17:22:19

Sitting room for me pollyperkins think you must be Downton Abbey posh to have a drawing room.

MissAdventure Thu 31-Aug-17 17:29:10

How about getting a pet 'spaded'?

Wheniwasyourage Thu 31-Aug-17 19:29:12

The use of 'lay down' instead of 'lie down'.

'Loose' instead of 'lose'.

'Floor' instead of 'ground' (outside).

'Train station' instead of 'railway station'.

BBbevan Thu 31-Aug-17 20:51:44

A reporter on a sports programme said a winner had been ' medaled' ?

durhamjen Thu 31-Aug-17 22:11:57

Mrs May saying "What me and my government are about is...."
She realised that she had said the wrong thing but did not know how to correct herself.

grumppa Thu 31-Aug-17 22:17:05

But "my government and I" sounds terrible too. A bit like "my husband and I". And it's not her government anyway. It's ours, unfortunately.

durhamjen Thu 31-Aug-17 22:26:12

What's wrong with just saying "the government"?
After all, she is just part of the government. It might be better for her if she did not try to make herself sound more important than the government.
My government and I might sound terrible, but it is grammatically correct.

grumppa Thu 31-Aug-17 22:46:18

I agree with "the government", dj. She just chose the worst available option, like her choice of Foreign Secretary.

durhamjen Thu 31-Aug-17 22:51:22

True, grumppa, so what else should we expect?

MamaCaz Mon 04-Sept-17 11:10:32

But if she had started with "My /The government ... " , I bet she would still have used a plural verb, and the discussion would now be about that! grin

durhamjen Mon 04-Sept-17 12:24:56

She obviously thinks she is more important than her government.

"For free" just doesn't make sense. It is free or it's not!

Anniebach Wed 06-Sept-17 10:06:19

I stick to my great aunts rules, a lounge belongs to airports, if only one room and a kitchen then it's a living room, lavatory and scent - we are not French ! pudding.

'I have been on a journey' noooo you have not, you have been on some ghastly celebrity show

nanasam Thu 07-Sept-17 17:08:32

Watch Eastenders, and you'll see the Fox family saying AKS instead of ASK. "I'll aks him" ??????????????????

MaizieD Mon 11-Sept-17 11:35:13

I don't mind 'scent' or 'perfume' but 'fragrance' sets my teeth on edge. Using it as a verb, 'fragranced,' is even worse...
