What phrases/sayings/words drive you mad? Mine are:

No problem
At the end of the day
Can't get my head around it
Showcasing (eg. she's showcasing her slim figure/dress/new style)

Parents who call their male children 'mate' or 'little man'.

When did a drawer become a ‘draw’?
Or behaviour become ‘ behaviours’?

Obligated instead of obliged.

Park up instead of park.

Meet up with instead of meet.

Horseback riding instead of riding, which used to be assumed to be on a horse (real or roundabout) whereas riding a bike is cycling! Think it's another Americanism. Ice skating is a similar one. Skating used to be assumed to be on ice, whereas rollerskating was on rollerskates.

There's always our dear friend Laura Norder to annoy us too.

People being interviewed on radio/tv who say to Interviewer ‘How are you’?

Wheniwasyourage Fri 01-Feb-19 18:24:50

Yes, and people, particularly politicians, who try to be chummy with interviewers by addressing them by their first names. Obviously the interviewer cannot reciprocate without seeming rude.

"Ended up in a wheelchair"
Someone may become a wheelchair user.
They do not "end up" in the chair.

Or........I've all my life in this town/place. No you haven't unless you're dead!

I think the term "fell pregnant" may have come from the not too distant past when to be having a baby outside wedlock made one a fallen woman - hence fell pregnant. May be wrong though.

People on TV discussions .."who start every sentence with "So..."

phoenix Sat 23-Feb-19 15:11:47

"Absolutely" !!!!!!!!

I was listening to a female rugby referee being interviewed on Radio 4 this morning, and she started every reply with " Absolutely ", I think the interviewer (Rev. Richard Coles) noticed this, and started rephrasing his questions.

Thank goodness he did, because I was reaching the stage of shouting at the radio!

How can someone "turn up dead"? You can find or discover a body but the deceased doesn't walk into a room and announce "I've turned up"
Also "Slept together" for having sex. Sleeping is not what happened!!

FarNorth Sat 23-Feb-19 23:57:55

'Slept together' really annoys me, too! 'Had sex' is a perfectly good, non-rude expression that could be used.

Wobbles Sun 24-Feb-19 01:44:57

Far North
I'm pleased to hear I'm not alone smile

Wheniwasyourage Mon 25-Feb-19 18:49:54

On the other hand, DP and I used to sleep together on occasion before we ever had sex (too scared of what our parents would say if I got pregnant) but I don't suppose anyone would have believed us. grin

Wobbles Mon 25-Feb-19 21:50:31

wheniwasyourage
I believe you grin

Wheniwasyourage Tue 26-Feb-19 18:32:59

Thank you Wobbles, that makes me feel a lot better! grin

PernillaVanilla Tue 05-Mar-19 09:38:05

fizzers Sun 07-Apr-19 16:13:43

iconic, transparent, out of the box, at the end of the day, and oh God, the one that annoys me most is 'draws' instead of drawers

Oldandverygrey Sun 07-Apr-19 17:09:28

The likes of ………..
Singing from the same hymn sheet,
The word "snuck" still not sure what that means
Hun
and my old favourite "basically"

Blinko Sun 07-Apr-19 17:13:52

Lessons will be learned - when to anyone with half a brain, it would have been perfectly obvious from the - er - get go...

Floradora9 Mon 08-Apr-19 16:23:43

Calling a lovely cake a Bad Boy
People on facebook looking for advice saying " hit me with " "throw me ideas " .

Oldandverygrey Mon 08-Apr-19 17:45:54

Just thought of another one...….fur baby...…. whats that supposed to mean.

MamaCaz Mon 08-Apr-19 18:07:29

People who start their answer to "how are you?" with "yes".
Totally nonsensical!

Blinko Tue 09-Apr-19 08:37:45

Oh yes, 'fur baby' - ugh!

SueH49 Mon 15-Apr-19 07:33:52

Fur baby is one of my pet hates - they are animals. Simples instead of simple another

My bad, instead of my mistake.
Going to go instead of going.
Yeah, no when answering a question.
