A survey has revealed the most irritating mispronounced words:

It does drive me nuts when people say lock for loch.
If they can't say the 'ch' sound, why not use a 'h' - so law+h - rather than a loudly articulated 'ck'?

Far North. I agree with this one. I live near Lough Erne and really irritates me when pronounced 'lock'.

I’m going “ter” stay at home instead I’m going “to” stay at home. Boris first brought this mispronunciation to my attention during his briefings and I’ve since noticed others saying it ?

Heighth for height. Width, breadth and HEIGHT!

MadeInYorkshire Thu 24-Jun-21 16:27:47

Mine is more a spelling irritation - 'DEFIANTLY' for definitely!

Scribbles Thu 24-Jun-21 16:27:46

Flaunt instead of flout.
Affect instead of effect
And fine tooth-comb instead of fine-toothed comb.

When my OH was a little lad, his mother would look critically at his hair and he was certain for years that she would tell him his parting was as "straight as a donkey's iron leg."

My dad could never pronounce "surpassed". It always came out as surprassed and became a sort of family joke. To this day, I have to think twice before I utter the word in public grin.

Lazy tongue losing t and now l. E.g. hospitaw
And how many men have "prostrate" trouble?
Don't get me on so many people saying" less" when it should be "fewer"

Less/fewer. Is. It mispronunciation !!

Please would somebody come back and explain weight/wait? I wonder if they mean spelling as opposed to pronunciation ?

Arto1s Thu 24-Jun-21 15:55:00

I live in the States - crasont for croissant. Grrr!

GrauntyHelen Thu 24-Jun-21 15:51:34

Prostrate rather than prostate

Mollygo Thu 24-Jun-21 15:39:54

NanaPlenty

When people took about men’s prostrate instead of prostate! Grrrrrr

Yes NanaPlenty, though the thought of all those prostrate men . . .

tictac how should weight be pronounced, if not 'wait'?

'weyt'

And

DH always pronounces weight as wait! Drives me round the bend.

What are you people talking about?
I've never heard weight pronounced differently from wait.

Yeah, no, me neither...confused

Blinko Thu 24-Jun-21 15:14:54

I haven't RTFT, but how about 'loth' and 'loathe'?

As in 'She was loth to hang out the washing in the rain' vs 'She loathed him with a passion'.

Mollygo Thu 24-Jun-21 15:00:29

My pet hates are haitch instead of aitch and garridge instead of garage.

Mollygo Thu 24-Jun-21 14:58:39

Weight is W+eight so how on earth are people pronouncing eight?
Or how are the pronouncing they? If weyt sounds different?
Wait is w+ ait (a small river island).
How are they pronouncing wait?
I do have one or two friends from different places who pronounce these words with more of an i sound- Arv reelly pud on wight since lockdown is what it sounds like on our WhatsApp calls.
Other wise I think this is a wind up.

Bazza Thu 24-Jun-21 14:57:26

Plarstic instead of plastic. Haitch instead of aitch.

montymops Thu 24-Jun-21 14:50:29

Any word ending in ‘ing’ - makin, eatin, thinkin printin - etc etc I always thought the word wrath was pronounced with an ‘or’ sound - wrorth -

Saggi Thu 24-Jun-21 14:44:53

This is how language evolves ...isn’t it! By mis-pronunciation or mis spellings. If any of you read Chaucer in the ‘raw’ most of it is unreadable .... but he wrote in English!! The english of his day. He would not recognise our language and think he’s in a foreign land. Do you call it a phone or telephone .... bus or omnibus..... tele or television.... car or automobile..... it’s always been this way hasn't it? Or Chaucer would be able to understand us .... instead of thinking where he’d landed!

Musicgirl Thu 24-Jun-21 14:41:02

Candidit instead of candidate, bin instead of been. Would of/could of/should of/ instead of would have/could have/should have.

Cid24 Thu 24-Jun-21 14:38:37

Aha and I’ve just read the official list! Seems I’m not alone ?

Cid24 Thu 24-Jun-21 14:37:31

Nucular instead of nuclear!

I've been wondering about what could sound different between weight and wait also FarNorth so you are not alone.

FannyCornforth Thu 24-Jun-21 14:18:28

Cross post FarNorth
What are these lunatics on about!?
