If I see even one more ect. on Gransnet I am going to have to comment. I know that “as long as the meaning is clear” is the usual standard but ect. is like chalk screeching on a blackboard to me.
Does it drive you crazy or is it just me?

Drives me nuts but I try not to be bothered. I know we are not allowed to pass comment so I don’t. One poster keeps spelling ‘shielding’ wrong and she uses the word a lot. Others say ‘here here’ when agreeing with another poster on a thread. In the big sea I don’t suppose it matters but I do notice them!

I’ve noticed that too Urms, very irritating.
Perhaps use the time spent shielding to learn the i before e rule.

I would appreciate a simple explanation of affect/effect, if anyone is willing?
I don't know properly, and always end up using "affect".
When is effect going to get a look in?

NotTooOld Fri 31-Dec-21 16:50:33

What annoys me is people using 'eg' (for example) when they mean 'ie' (that is) and 'ie' when they mean 'eg'. Happens all the time, everywhere......aagh.

MissAdventure Fri 31-Dec-21 16:39:28

All of these things came naturally to me when I was younger, but now, I realise people must have been gritting their teeth at my mistakes (if I made any)

Using the wrong phrases, calling a sofa a settee.
You name it - I've done it!

It's all quite amusing until it turns a bit nasty.

Love the spelling police photo! I've just remembered another one - stationary and stationery. I always used to say to my students remember 'e' for envelope - they weren't at all 'greatful'!

Sign seen in a Charity Shop "anyone caught shoplifting will be bard in the future". Just so....

A recent irritaton is the use of 'curb' when referring to the edge of a pavement, instead of kerb. I do wonder if that is the form used in America .................. yes, it is, according to:-

This might have been mentioned before, but one can buy a t-shirt with the logo ‘I am silently correcting your grammar’.
Wouldn’t you just love one? NO DEFINITELY NOT… quietly… yes! ?

My big gripe is lose and loose. Drives me nuts! I teach the grandchildren 'When you lose weight your trousers are loose'.

I'm going to tackle bow and bough next, which may be the most confusing words in the English language given the variety of pronunciations and meanings.
Bough v Bow

Your right - sorry you're right - it's more trouble than it's worth!

Grammar - it’s knowing your shit from you’re shit

MissAdventure Fri 31-Dec-21 15:26:39

I suppose the point, on here, at least, is to note that we don't actually have to apologise to people we don't know, about mistakes we make or ones that our phones do - my story and I'm sticking to it

Calistemon Fri 31-Dec-21 15:24:41

That's me, Chestnut ?

I agree autocorrect is responsible for many errors, which is why I don't understand why people don't switch it off. They spend half their life apologising for their autocorrect mistakes! I don't use it, instead I own my mistakes. ?

My neighbour just makes a similar sounding noise, and I have to decipher what she means.
Like the 2 Ronnies sketches. smile

There is a man somewhere, who goes around with a ladder, correcting signs and shop fronts.

Yes, he beat me to it, it was my ambition to do that when I retired.

Well, my grandson and myself are on tenderhooks, hoping we don't catch covic.

My friend calls it Corvid or Covis.
He's very clever but is dyslexic. It makes life difficult.

I'm not sure about affect/effect anymore.
I used to be; then I joined gransnet.

It's the affect Gransnet can have on you.
