I think aluminum was the original name given to the metal by Humphrey Davy, but he later referred to it as aluminium. The former became the official USA spelling and pronunciation while "English English" speakers use aluminium.
A lot of metals end in "ium", so maybe that is why aluminium was changed to fit in with the rest. The rest of us who would claim to speak British English say "aluminium" too, not just the English.
