‘ Attendees’?

I’ve just seen this in an article about the coronation of King Charles. Surely ‘attenders’ is correct? I’d have said the ‘ee’ ending refers to the one to whom something is done, the object of a transitive verb, like employer and employee. Or is that no longer the case?

Far simpler to refer to them as "guests". Otherwise: the people attending the coronation.

I would use attendees in English if I had to, but it is kind of fake French. Obviously employé(es) has come into English directly.
Attendés could mean people who wait around I suppose..... 😂
