I always thought it was a Christmas Fair
Then it became Fayre which sounds a bit twee but we know what they mean
Today a notice advertising a Fare.
I despair 😥

Finefare, Budgens. Lipton's. International Stores....

Marydoll Thu 02-Nov-23 22:11:20

Good old Finefare!
I once won a PlayStation in a Finefare competition. I thought someone was playing a joke, when I got the phone call. My children thought Christmas had come early!

I remember Finefare! In the days when chicken was a great luxury (early 50s) I remember my mum and gran queuing outside the new Finefare which was opening in the nearby town because they were giving a chicken to the first X customers. They each got one and were very chuffed! Do you remember the Home and Colonial stores too? Couldn’t call them that now!
Apologies for totally derailing the thread.

I remember FineFare, too - and chicken being so expensive we never had it! Mind you my mother didn’t like chicken anyway. When asked why she’d say, ‘Because it’s a bird.’ 🤔
She didn’t like ‘eggy’ eggs, either.
Or tomatoes, but when dds in their 20s finally asked why, she said, ‘I don’t know really - I’ve never actually tried one.’ 😂

Did go to town and looked 'round the square,
Oh how I wish we still had Finefare!

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 02-Nov-23 14:44:57

How did you fare at ye olde shoppes keepcalm? Was the weather fair? Were you shopping for fare for a fayre?

I love gala pie. Good fare to have at your fair.

Grammaretto Thu 02-Nov-23 09:46:46

Gala pie is sold in the baker in Galashiels.
It looks good 😀

Sounds fair.

RosiesMaw Thu 02-Nov-23 08:04:30

For once and for all
Fare is food
A Fair is an event, pseudo olde worlde spelling Fayre.

What more needs to be said?

About to throw a spanner in the works. If the gala was selling only food, would that constitute a Christmas fare? wink

Only Gala pie allowed!

Fair do, I do like a slice of Gala pie!

I think it would be a Christmas Fare Fayre...

Wheniwasyourage Sun 29-Oct-23 19:53:19

Brewers Fayre does not have an apostrophe. On the same walk on which I checked that, I saw a pub offering the chance to book for Festive Fayre!! confused

^Possibly in an abstract way “ An inadequate fare for the work they have to do”^
Or perhaps “A Christmas fare to remember” meaning “food” in general.

I'm not sure you need the 'a' or the 'an' though to use it as a noun.

'Inadequate fare for the work they have to do' = 'not enough food to sustain them for the work they have to do'?

'Christmas fare to remember' = 'By 'eck, that were bl**dy good Christmas nosh' 😂

👍👍👍

sodapop Sun 29-Oct-23 13:05:29

I agree too Grammaretto I can just about tolerate Fayre but Fare is completely wrong.

‘Fayre’ makes me cringe too - why has it been an apparently obligatory description of a bazaar-type event for the last few decades?
