I call them "Baked" potatoes but a friend calls them "Jacket" potatoes and further insists that referring to them as "baked" is a sign of being "common". Really?
Give me strength!
She IS a bit of a Hyacinth......

mae13 I suspect your friend has a chip on her shoulder.

Brilliant!

My mum always used to call them baked potatoes.

You are all totally wrong!

They are SPUDS not potatoes.

Gwyllt Tue 23-Jan-24 14:13:25

What should the aforementioned potatoes be named if done in the air fryer

MaizieD Tue 23-Jan-24 14:23:17

What would she call roasties, then? They're baked in the oven... hmm

Gwyllt Tue 23-Jan-24 14:26:08

If splitting hairs roasties are actually cooked in fat. Therefore fried in the oven

We call them jacket spuds, must be really common then, 😂.

My dad called them jacket potatoes so we do.

My mother called roast potatoes baked potatoes 😃

Spuds in their jackets? Only on Bonfire Night when I was young.

Your friend has some comically weird ideas! Is she Hyacinth-ish in other ways?

I use both terms.

Roast potatoes are roasted
Baked potatoes are baked
Mashed potatoes are mashed
Boiled potatoes.... Sautéed potatoes...
I think you get my drift! grin

Common as muck, me. I say baked potatoes. It describes how they are cooked not what they are wearing. You can describe an unpeeled boiled potato as a jacket potato, you cannot describe it as a baked potato.

Mashed potatoes are mashed

So what's the difference between mashed potatoes and creamed potatoes?

Personally, I prefer Dauphinoise Potatoes.

It's a relief from cleaning 😃

Who cares what they’re called. As my son says “just wind it in.”🤣

Callistemon21 Tue 23-Jan-24 14:59:34

Does that mean I have to log off and carry on with cleaning? And furniture moving?

pascal30 Tue 23-Jan-24 15:19:28

Baked potatoes need to be crispy and definitely cooked in an oven.. must get some nice large potatoes and relish being common.. what a perculiar woman she must be..

shysal Tue 23-Jan-24 15:31:25

I have always said 'jacket'. To me 'baked' could apply to other potato dishes cooked in the oven.

I have always said 'jacket'. To me 'baked' could apply to other potato dishes cooked in the oven.

But most people wouldn't call those dishes 'a baked potato'.

Surely, creamed potatoes are sliced boiled potatoes served in white sauce?

Nothing to do with mashed potatoes, at all.

I thought they were the same as mashed but a bit posher?
