I call them "Baked" potatoes but a friend calls them "Jacket" potatoes and further insists that referring to them as "baked" is a sign of being "common". Really?

Always called them jacket potatoes and I m from a very working class background The menus around here call them jacket potatoes too
i too would expect a baked potato to be peeled and in the oven
A jacket potato has its jacket still on

Creamed potatoes are posh mash aren’t they ?

Callistemon21 Tue 23-Jan-24 16:14:38

Just looked it ypup:

Mashed potatoes - mashed with butter and a little milk, mashed with a potato masher

Creamed potatoes - ditto but processed for longer, perhaps with cream and mixed with an electric mixer.

I think they go too gloopy if over-processed.

For mash get Smash!

Tell that to the 'baked potato' shops - never seen one yet which calls itself a jacket potato shop.

I call them Jacket potatoes, my partner calls them baked potatoes. They are lovely and taste the same whatever name we call them.

Callistemon21 - I suppose creamed potatoes is a fancier name for what are what I'd call whipped potatoes.
grin

Interesting discussion. I thought that I have always called them baked potatoes but now that jacket potatoes have been mentioned I am not so sure. Jacket potatoes does ring a tiny bell from my childhood. I consulted Mr P and he insists on ^ baked^. Personally, I care not a jot so long as they are filled with something delicious.

And I think Dauphinoise basically is from the region where gratins were/are popular?
I'm not well up on where fancier names come from.

I love a wonderful baked potato .. For us, it is un-important what they are called. They are delicious if roasted or baked to their correct texture.

I enjoy a Tsp. of Room temperature Asturian or French butter and a sprinkle of salt and black freshly ground pepper.

Though once in awhile, I also like "pizza toppings" inside the baked potato .. Mozzarella di buffala, Parmesano, anchovies, cherry tomatoes and olives or capers.

Fun once in awhile ..

NotSpaghetti Tue 23-Jan-24 16:43:06

Very true !!!

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 23-Jan-24 17:03:49

If Wetherspoons call them jacket potatoes that settles the argument - the posh name is baked potatoes .

All eating places consider it de riguer to call them jackets though.

TillyTrotter Tue 23-Jan-24 17:06:06

I call them either, depends on the day.
It’s a good day for them today as they are comfort food with butter and grated cheddar.

I wasn't talking about the likes of Wetherspoons - I was talking about the shops which only sell filled baked potatoes.

BlueBelle Tue 23-Jan-24 17:09:02

We don’t have any baked potato shops here Misinterpreted but all our menus posh or pub, list them as jacket potatoes
Just saying

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 23-Jan-24 17:13:41

I used to have lunch at a baked potato shop in Cambridge many years ago. I haven’t seen one since (must get out more). I suppose if I was having people other than family round and was serving baked potatoes I might possibly say jacket to impress - but that ain’t likely to happen.

Jaxjacky Tue 23-Jan-24 17:16:58

Jacket & Jill’s have a potato stand at Glastonbury.

grannyactivist Tue 23-Jan-24 17:19:04

Is this a North/South thing?

Growing up in Manchester we had jacket potatoes - I’ve never given it a second’s thought until reading this thread and realise that I generally use the term baked potatoes now. 🤷‍♀️
