A bump doesn’t need a grammatical check 😁

The downside is, these bumping threads can knock genuine threads off the Active list.

Would it be better to post on active threads instead?

I know, by posting on this thread, I have shot myself in the foot.
😄

karmalady Mon 06-May-24 07:11:21

it could be taken as disrespectful to the initiator of the active thread. This why I put the two bumping threads up.

Marydoll Mon 06-May-24 08:03:15

In what way is it disrespectful? One could try and add to a genuine thread, rather than use the term bump.

I have to admit to initially thinking bumping was a useful strategy for stopping the spam, but I am beginning to find it annoying and ineffectual.
The reason I posted my comment was that when I looked at the sidebar earlier, two of the latest threads were named bump.

There was no disrespect intended towards any poster. It was merely an observation.

Now I have yet again, pushed this thread to the top, but I felt I had to explain my reason.

If you don't like bumps, the answer is to post something on a genuine thread - surely everyone can find something to say on almost any subject?

However, just posting "bump" is very useful if you have come across a spam thread that clearly needs to be quickly shoved down the queue a bit before an unsuspecting (new?) poster finds it and posts something on it, but you are in a hurry and can't think of a suitable post about anything else.

I agree Marydoll - “bumping” has had its uses eg when planning a Meet up to bring a thread to peoples attention when it had slipped down the Active Discussions list .
But 1) the Active list does not immediately place recent threads at the top of the list and 2) it is annoying to read a new post on a thread only to find all it says is “Bump” and 3) so called “Bump” threads are as intrusive and irritating as some of the spam we have suffered recently.
Perhaps enough is enough.
Some spam is usually easy enough to spot (lots of shouty capitals, dodgy links, extremely suspect OPs) so what’s to stop us scrolling past, hiding the threads or to paraphrase that TV programme you may remember calls “Why Don’t You” (Turn Off Your Computer etc)

I’m rather ou of the loop with this ‘bump’ malarkey that has suddenly started appearing on threads.
Does it mean you agree, or you are ‘bumping up’ a thread that has gone dormant, or you want to get rid of a thread?
Can someone enlighten please?
What has it got to do with scam threads?

Farzanah Mon 06-May-24 15:50:59

Marydoll Fri 10-May-24 05:59:49

I have reported the latest three spells.
I shall continued to state reported, otherwise we do not know if they have been or not.

Astitchintime Fri 10-May-24 06:44:26

Bumpety bump!

BlueBelle Fri 10-May-24 06:51:54

Farzanah when you bump the thread goes to the top of the list ( suppose to) so the idea is to overload the spam posts and send them down the list into obscurity but let’s be honest it’s not working and is irritating
PLEASE just keep writing on valid threads, that’s surely the answer and will help them stay up with great respect to Marydoll I m finding dozens of bumping threads almost as annoying as the spam 🤣

Marydoll Fri 10-May-24 07:04:47

Why greatest respect, Bluebelle, am I being told off? 😉
I'm finding the bumping extremely irritating too! If only one person says they have reported, no need for anyone else to do so, but at least we know they have been reported.
This morning at 6am. there were a number of SPAM threads and lots of bumping, which knocked active threads down the list.
I had no idea if those doing the bumping had reported them or not. Even if they had indicated that along with their bump, that they had reported, I wouldn't have needed to report.
Apoligies if I sound grumpy, I am!! grin.

Calendargirl Fri 10-May-24 07:12:47

I have reported 13 spam posts this morning, from about 6.30 onwards. Also posted ‘reported’ so others know it has been done. Probably duplicating the reporting, as others don’t say they have done it.

They have all gone now. I think reporting them and posting ‘reported’ is more effective than ‘bumping’. Does it matter if they push others down the ‘Active’ list? They soon get pushed down anyway.

‘Reporting’ is time consuming, but if none of us did it or let others know….

🤷‍♀️

Marydoll Fri 10-May-24 07:17:22

Thank you Calendargirl.

BlueBelle Fri 10-May-24 07:46:35

Oops I meant it genuinely because I know you’re a very tech person no it was far from a telling off oh dear that wasn’t meant at all Marydoll I was hesitant to add my two penneth as I know you’re much more clever than me at tech stuff

I have reported a few over night too and done as you Calandergirl written reported so others know it’s been done and don’t replicate

Marydoll Fri 10-May-24 07:53:47

OH, Bluebelle!! I am so used to being told off, especially on GN, I have become paranoid!! 🤣

I will try not to be so grumpy in future. wink.
