Why do some people refer to Turmeric as “tuemeric” ?
Burn, turn, spurn, murmur…… confusedconfused

Macadia Sun 05-May-24 21:21:07

I say /ter-meric/ but everyone else says /too-mrik. I don't know which one is correct. Also, I say /skahnz' and everyone else says /sconez/ so I don't know who is correct but my mum always made /skahnz/. It's funny.

Elrel Sun 05-May-24 21:32:23

On a Radio4 food programme there was a conversation with one broadcaster saying ‘turmeric’ and the other ‘tewmeric’. I asked my Indian co-grandmother who was definite that in Allahabad it was ‘turmeric’.

crazyH Sun 05-May-24 21:34:45

From the horse’s mouth - ter - mer - ick

Elrel Sun 05-May-24 21:42:01

At one time ‘mare’ and ‘mayor’ were pronounced the same. Over the past few years the latter is often pronounced ‘May-or’.
That is not what we heard on Children’s Hour’s Toy Town. Larry the Lamb used to bleat ‘Mr Mayor, Sir’ as ‘mare’.

I was annoyed by "vineg-er- rette" recently. It's vinaigrette, like regret.

Yes. Just checked and my phone changed what I wrote which was scollops. I don't know why some people pronounce scallops as scollops!

I call them scollops.
Ditto a ‘scolloped’ (scalloped) edge to something.

NotSpaghetti Thu 30-May-24 08:33:51

When did ogle start being pronounced "oggle" (like toggle)?

I've heard it a lot recently and twice this morning!

Sparklefizz Thu 30-May-24 08:41:49

Turmeric pronounced too-meric gets me too.

Mischievous pronounced mis-chee-vee-ous annoys me.

But I call scallops "scollops" blush

Parsley3 Thu 30-May-24 10:03:34

Scallops pronounced as scollops sounds pretentious to my ears but I do know that it is a regional thing and my complaint is not at all valid. So no criticism intended to any scollopers.
Turmeric is tur-mer-ic when I can actually remember what it is called. My word retrieval is dire at times.

I flinch when people pronounce the g in tagliatelle!

Magsymoo Thu 30-May-24 11:02:16

We all need to chill about so called ‘mispronunciations’. English is not a phonetic language. So many words , for all kinds of reasons , are not pronounced as they are spelt - bough, dumb, chaos etc etc

NotSpaghetti Thu 30-May-24 13:49:38

Magsymoo - this is ^Pedant's Corner!

I think we all know - but we are allowed to dislike things just the same.
grin

Romola Thu 30-May-24 14:20:33

What about these?
February pronounced Febuary oh dear. Prefer Febry.
Probably pronounced proberly, also oh dear.
Prefer probly.

Scollops is correct and scallops is an alternative because most people don't know that scollops is actually the correct version.

I was one of those people so I looked up the word in dictionaries that give phonetic pronunciations. /skol'ep always comes first. Sorry, can't seem to do the schwa for the e.

Baggs Thu 30-May-24 14:50:23

Scallops is the correct spelling. Scollops is the correct pronunciation.

Wheniwasyourage Thu 30-May-24 14:54:18

Don't care. I still think scallops sounds correct and scollops sounds silly, so there!

Oops! That’s me!
How would/could you say it without the ‘g’? I can’t make sense of it.
🤔

I like scallops, not scollops and my blind has scalloped, not scolloped edges.
Whatever you learn, or prefer to use is the correct pronunciation. After all,
does anyone say shollow instead of shallow?
Or collow instead of callow or eat marsh mollows?
I must admit though that my hippopotamus was wollowing in mud not wallowing.

Baggs Thu 30-May-24 16:05:28

Oh! I agree, whenimyourage. I just don’t buy them 😂.

MissAdventure Thu 30-May-24 16:08:09

I think it's all a load of ballocks.

😅

Bellanonna Thu 30-May-24 16:54:58

Urms, the g would not be sounded in Italian, so we’re just going along with the original pronunciation.

Freya5 Thu 30-May-24 17:17:54

How about chorizo, according to a Spanish friend it's pronounced "choritho".

Wheniwasyourage Thu 30-May-24 18:14:23

I think it would be chorizo, not choritho in South America and possibly in Southern Spain, Freya5, so it's nice to think that we are not the only ones who can be totally confused!

What about Quinoa?

My friend insists it’s pronounced Kenya but I think it’s keenwah.

I have always said keen - oh - uh for as long as I remember.
