Just seen elsewhere. 😩

Well, his first whole sentence as I struggled one evening with his Terry nappy (remember them?) was "What's the matter with that bloody pin?" I did take more care with my language after that.

As it’s Pedants’ Corner - “What were your baby’s /your babies’ first words?

maddyone Fri 10-May-24 23:29:07

As it’s a pedant question, are you asking about all our babies?
Or just the words of one baby (baby’s)

I think Witzend was telling us what she'd seen elsewhere - not asking us!
That's probably why it's in Pedants’ Corner!

One of them ( the eldest) was the word ‘no’. Nothing’s changed there!

I remember my son's first sentence. He had been feeling unwell, so I brought him into bed with me. My bedroom faced east and I was woken by him banging me on the head and saying, 'Mummy, look, it's the sun!'. as the sun was coming up. He was just a year old then.

I get the real point of the posting but just to say that DD2s first words were DuppDee....still says it now.

We are often told on Pedants' Corner that spelling and grammar mistakes don't matter as long as the meaning is clear. I've always found that a weak argument.

BlueBelle Sat 11-May-24 06:53:20

Don’t understand is this meant to be in pendants !!
Anyway I m sorry I can’t remember

Cabbie21 Sat 11-May-24 07:08:09

It is in pedants’ corner because of a missing apostrophe and because it is grammatically incorrect: a singular verb with a plural subject.
My eldest child’s first words were Dada, doggy, though we didn’t have one, and Obidah= Banana!

Grandma70s Sat 11-May-24 07:14:59

Both my children had the same first words, though perhaps in a different order - light, and (ba)nana.

Witzend had read the question "what was your babies first words"(sic) somewhere. I didn't think she wanted posters to answer the question. She had reacted to a poorly constructed question and that's why she posted it in Pedants' Corner.
Or have I missed something here?

Aldom Sat 11-May-24 08:14:27

Greta my thoughts exactly. smile

RosiesMaw Sat 11-May-24 08:35:38

That’s why we have that useful device “sic”

Grammaretto Sat 11-May-24 08:40:57

It's not pendants corner BTW 🤣🤣

4 months old, every time I wheeled his pram under the trees he looked up and said Aaoo. Trees were named aaoos from then on.

Greta Sat 11-May-24 09:16:20

Still not clear then. Posters who want to answer the question "What was your baby's first word?" could start a thread in Chat.
The point here is that using poor spelling/grammar often leads to misunderstanding - as we have just seen!

Yes, I certainly should have made it clear that it was for pedants’ corner.

Sorry!

It seemed crystal clear to me. If it had been a genuine question it wouldn’t have been posted in Pedants’ Corner.
