I noticed on the BBC News last night when it was summarising the Olympic results, the captions read ‘meter’ instead of ‘metre’.

And yes, I know that is how the USA spell it, but this was the BBC and it was in Paris.

From a book I was reading, the star prize goes to

"and then he made a lewd hand jester"

This really conjured up a vision to me of a puppet, dressed as a jester, exposing itself!

“ SIR – I have been reading the letters on the Initial Teaching Alphabet, phonetics and shorthand with interest.

I once dictated a note that said “a gentle nudge to the Personnel department should set the ball rolling”. When the note came back from the typist it read “… a genital nudge to the Personnel department should set the ball rolling”.

I was never sure if the typist was a poor speller or if she had something else on her mind at the time.”

Sack the proofreader.
