Pedants' corner

Not a whinge - just a Brian Bilston poem that caught my eye.

I don't know any poetry, but I really enjoy it, when I find one that strikes a chord. smile

Open to suggestions, if anyone has any?

Thanks! 😃
Just read it, ah it’s lovely, funny and touching at the same time.

Oreo

Can’t make it out, the words are all fuzzy.

You can read them where Doodledog posted them on this thread on Tue 10-Sep-24 15:43:24.

I just listened to him reading the caveman's lament. smile
I'd not heard of it before.

RosiesMaw2 Wed 18-Sept-24 13:51:32

Bumping this for anybody who missed it last week and because it also contains the wonderful “Caveman’s Lament”

I'm a big fan and if you can see him live do so! He's a male version of Pam Ayres.

Doodledog Fri 13-Sept-24 10:38:49

Both of those make sense grin.

A slight tangent, but when I was about six or seven I overheard a friend of my aunt, who was a leader in the Boys' Brigade say he was going to 'twist a few arms' to get the boys to do something or other. He was a teacher in 'the big school' and I dreaded going there as I thought he tortured children into submission grin. He was a lovely man, too.

Children's logic can be very literal!

Witzend Fri 13-Sept-24 10:18:39

As a child I really thought it was a ‘piece’ of quiet, i.e. a little bit of peace!

Similar to ‘rest bite’ which I often saw on a forum for carers of people with dementia. I could see the logic - the poor things were desperate for a ‘bite’ of rest.

How come I’ve never heard of Brian Bilston before? No need to answer that! Absolutely brilliant. Thank you Elegran.

“I just want a little piece of quiet”

Away to look up his books.

I love his poems, very to the point and very clever too

I remember that one, "She say, Love not invented yet!"

That’s the one!

‘She choose cave of Tim next door’

I love that poem.

My favourite is the Caveman’s lament. I’m just getting off the bus now, but if nobody’s posted it when I get home later, I’ll do it for your entertainment 😀

Cressy Tue 10-Sept-24 11:30:58

This is another one 😢

grannyqueenie Tue 10-Sept-24 11:26:34

I love his poems, they always make me smile and so perceptive too! 😀

Wheniwasyourage Tue 10-Sept-24 11:08:03

Yes, he has published books, Elegran. We have "Days Like These" which has a poem for every day - (highly recommended). In it are listed these titles: "You Took the Last Bus Home", "Diary of a Somebody", "Alexa, what is there to know about love?" and 2 for children: "Refugees" and "Fifty Ways to Score a Goal". I assume they are all books of poems.

Elegran Tue 10-Sept-24 11:02:51

I wonder if he has published a book of poems?

MissInterpreted Mon 09-Sept-24 21:01:23

Saw this earlier - very clever indeed. He certainly has a way with words!

lixy Mon 09-Sept-24 20:52:54

That’s brilliant, thank you for posting it.

I did not get it at first but when I did I thought it was great.
I must look out and read some more of BB's poems.
Thanks Elegranthanks

Wheniwasyourage Mon 09-Sept-24 20:38:35

Yes, thanks for that, Elegran. How does he do it? I’m very glad he does!

Marydoll Mon 09-Sept-24 20:14:37

I loved that! Thanks Elegran.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 09-Sept-24 20:08:45

I love Brian Bilston. Very clever as always with his play on words isn’t he? Thinking up even one of his lines would take me an age!
