I used to know a little rhyme that explained the difference between affect and effect - but I've forgotten it.
Can anyone help?

I don’t know the rhyme, but tend to think that affect is the action, and effect is the result.

affect also means emotion in MH

No sorry. Never heard of it.
But affect is very rarely a noun.
There is a technical usage in psychology.
But not in ordinary usage.

Agreed

Yes that's what I was thinking of.
But it's a special usage.
Best avoided in everyday conversation to reduce muddle.

There is one trick to help you use the right word in almost every case: the word RAVEN:
R = Remember.
A = Affect is a.
V = Verb. E = Effect is a.
N = Noun.

It's a bit of a catch all but mostly works"

ExDancer Sat 04-Jan-25 12:56:03

Thanks Krispii - that's pretty good, now I must remember RAVEN
thanks

Effect is quantitative result of a cause as in "The effect of laxatives on me is diarrhoea" Affect is quality of how you feel, in "Laxatives affect me badly."

Calendargirl Sat 04-Jan-25 14:07:29

But you can say ‘to effect a cure’.

Makes it a verb.

I'm hoping world leaders will come together to effect a peace settlement as the wars could affect us all.

I have this wonderful little book I regularly use which answers all my grammatical queries.

NanKate Sat 04-Jan-25 14:35:18

Here’s the book.

I can’t understand why it is such a problem. The words may sound similar but have different meanings.
Like loose and lose - we don’t need rhymes or mnemonics to remember the difference between rite and right or wait and weight do we?
Just different words. confusedconfused

If I hear anyone say ‘off of’ I want my old English Teacher, Miss Outhwaite, to put them right. 🧐

welbeck Sat 04-Jan-25 14:47:07

With a long gnarled cane ?
Thwack.

No, the sharp edge of a ruler 😯

My English Teacher was lovely she would have explained clearly and kindly the correct spelling or grammar.

On MN you can ‘react’ to posts, with ‘thanks’, ‘agree’, etc.

On my more thoroughly 😈 days I’d really like a ‘slap’ one, for anyone writing loose for lose, your for you’re, confusing it’s/its,
who’s/whose, etc.
Not to mention the mis-plurals - baby’s, party’s, Christmas’s, box’s, etc.

Only I’d be e-slapping people all day!

Calendargirl Sat 04-Jan-25 18:16:05

Re baby’s and party’s-

‘Change the y to i, and add ‘es’.

Primary school, late 50’s/early 60’s.

Depending on what device you are using predictive text has a lot to answer for with regards to ‘s s’ s ies etc.

welbeck Sat 04-Jan-25 20:54:07

I shouldn't really be nosing around in this corner as most of this doesn't bother me.
But I do find it amusing that only on GN do people create an extra post to correct their own SPAG.
Or rather I think to assure others that they do

welbeck Sat 04-Jan-25 20:55:54

know the difference.
Heaven forfend that anyone should think they don't fully understand all finer points of SPAG.
I find that self regard funny.
