Another new 'hate' to add to my list

These days I seem to go around looking for things to hate.
My new one is the word "to".
Many people, including the king, pronounce it as "ta", well not quite "ta", more a mixture of "ta" and "te".
For example "I'm going ta the shops", or "We need ta get out into the fresh air".
Grrrrrh

This has probably been discussed before, but I cringe when people say "haitch" for the letter H.

In Edinburgh it can be ‘itch’!

I have lived here in Birmingham all my life. When we first moved to this part of Brum, which is near the Black Country, we couldn't understand a lot of what people were saying. We went to buy some paint and asked the assistant if they had a particular shade. She replied 'If it A on the shelf, we A gorrit'..

I'm a Black Country wench. The correct spelling is 'If it ay on the shelf, we ay gorrit.' Loffin' grin

That really triggers me!

I remember the piece you mention Re the man being interviewed with the unkempt hair
Yes, his hair was long, but very clean and tidy.
If you transpose his hair onto the image of a woman would you still say the hair was unkempt

I would, Petra! It’s untidy with bits sticking out and it looked a bit greasy to me, but that might be just the way it looked on the tv.

It really isn’t as annoying as when ‘to’ is confused with ‘too’ and vice versa……..that really yanks my chain!

Crossstitchfan Mon 01-Sept-25 00:58:00

‘Must of went’ is what gets my goat, instead of ‘must have been’. A friend says it, and I want to keep her as a friend so I have said nothing. One of these days, though, she will catch me wincing!

Unnecessary use of the word,’so’ at the start of every sentence. Maybe it is just here but it ps me off.

Crossstitchfan Mon 01-Sept-25 02:06:42

Not just on here nanna8. I hear it all the time in Tv interviews! It seems no-one being interviewed can answer a question without prefacing it with ‘so’. I cringe whenever it happens. Has it taken the place of ‘well’ which used to be the beginning of an answer not long ago?

Cabbie21 Mon 01-Sept-25 07:25:02

Yes, since I realised that ‘So’ has taken the place of ‘Well’ I have reluctantly come to tolerate its use.

"See you later" when used by people who I am definitely not going to see later eg the delivery driver who brought me a bed from the other end of the country last week

I do wonder what starts these new ways of speaking.

At the moment I am very irritated by the use of “way” in expressions such as “way too hot” or “way too early”. What’s wrong with “much” or “far”?

I dislike very fun.
Great fun, such fun, yes. But very fun keeps popping up.

I love most accents. I have a very strong Brummie accent. Probably the most disliked accent in the UK but it's who I am.

Mine probably comes a close second for being disliked Kate1949. I have a London/Cockney accent that makes the cast of Eastenders sound like Penelope Keith.

It annoys me when on TV they're encouraging you to enter a draw & they say "Good Luck!"
How can you wish everyone participating in the draw good luck? That leaves us all where we started, so what's the point?

And I'm not normally picky about written or spoken english but this is just such an insincere thing to say I hate it!

Gogo84 Sun 02-Nov-25 16:27:40

Don't get me started. I agree, could of instead of could have, Haitch instead of aitch, restauranteur instead of restaurateur and ME and my friend are.... NO my friend and I are going.... You wouldn't say Me is going. Also don't put an etra I in michevous. It is not ious. End of rant.

I’m not bothered in the slightest in how someone speaks, it’s how they are as a person that I go by,

I think most people feel like that, HeavenLeigh.
I certainly do but I am also infuriated by bad grammar.
When someone says that they did something "quicker" than another , I bellow at the tv screen " more quickly"......
Don't quote me " correct informal use"........
Like many of our generation I had separate teachers for English Language and Literature and the subjects were examined separately.
Also my elder sister taught mainly English all her life and bad grammar gets me a big telling off.
She's myelder sister..........what can you do .....?

Another vote for gonna in TV subtitles .
And girls are now on period .
Apart from that I find myself avoiding people so that I don't have another lecture on what to do with my life .
I don't ask them .
I'm not interested in what they think that I should be doing.
In one hour a couple of weeks ago I had one person telling me to paint my house pure white right through and then another person telling me to build a cocktail bar in the garden .
Last Friday when yet another lecture on my knee and what to do with it threatened to ensue before I'd even sat at the table for lunch . I said I don't want to talk about my health.
I have lost count how many times I've said it to the lady who is obsessed with it .
For years ,I've answered people politely longing for them to shut up and now I'm not going to do that anymore .
