Or even elf’s on shelf’s - thankfully only seen at this time of year.

Witzend Comeback and explain that this is a thread about bad punctuation. Not about whether your children find elves etc cute.

Since it’s Pedants’ Corner, I’d have thought GNers would have twigged!
Reindeer is plural anyway, no need for the ‘s’.

As for elves on their shelves, well, if anybody can be bothered with the pesky things, good luck to them. My dd has never done the elf thing, and TBH I don’t think the Gdcs (10, 9, 5) have ever asked or felt deprived!

I hate them- nothing but commercial rubbish.

When I see this stuff in the shops I want to smash it all and stamp on it!

That is a bit drastic. Please don't.

I did restrain myself today... but seriously I think there is something very unattractive and rather malevolent about them. And they are everywhere!!!

But, each to their own...

Catgrann Tue 25-Nov-25 17:22:09

Please may I come and watch you do that 😉

I agree - I absolutely detest the stupid things! Just another means to get people to spend more money on useless tat...

Speaking of shelf’s, some years ago there was a notice in the office saying ‘ Do not put anything on this shelve.’
Eventually, after I remarked on it, the office manager said ‘ I was wondering how long it would take for someone to comment.’

Me too. Do we not have enough cr*p to buy at this time of year?

End of October, I find myself rushing to M&S to get advent calendars that actually show the nativity story rather than Bart Simpson etc

'Elves on Shelves' - Why? (Where has this peculiar and sinister concept come from?)

Have a 'Magical' Christmas - Why?

What's magic and elves got to do with Christmas?

Your elf's of eaten there reindeers mince pie's.

(I found that very difficult to write)

I've got a friend (she's 68) who writes like that. Her texts to me often say things like "Me and hubby went their last week" or "Know, I didn't see there children"....she gets "No and "Know" mixed up!

The elves that my DD uses were bought 3 years ago for £1 each. The mischief they get up to is achieved using things that are in everyday use. A bit of fun and not likely to break the bank.

I have a suspicion that a naughty elf is living with me. Seems to think it very funny to hide my reading glasses! Anyone else got one?

Well I'm glad you restrain yourself from buying outfits and other merch for your elf!

However, a lot of people clearly do spend money on this tat and therefore every little 'cheap' item adds up for those profiting from it.

Maybe I should just make one of my own instead of buying one...?

ViceVersa Wed 26-Nov-25 10:27:38

I just think it's a stupid concept in the first place.

Well, Father Christmas is magic, isn’t he? How would he get into locked houses with no chimneys otherwise?

I was horrified to learn that the OED has now deemed "roofs" to be a correct plural for "roof". The "ves" will probably all disappear one by one eventually.

Oreo Wed 26-Nov-25 15:08:33

Language changes doesn’t it? The plural in Anglo Saxon times was an ending of en, that changed with the Normans into es plural endings.
So before 1066 a pair of shoes ( as we now call them) was shoen.
All those en plural endings vanished apart from two, oxen and brethren.

Oreo Wed 26-Nov-25 15:09:50

Magic and elves go together as part of Christmas don’t they?
Santa’s Workshop couldn’t manage without either.😁

Mojack26 Wed 26-Nov-25 15:30:50

Your point is?

I was always taught that it is indeed roofs, not to be confused with * hooves*
(Rooves? Never!)

RosieandherMaw Wed 26-Nov-25 15:46:46

The word "roofs" has been the standard plural since at least the 18th century , making the transition from "rooves" gradual and complete by that time. While "rooves" was once used due to an old rule for changing "-f" to "-ves" in the plural (like "hoof" to "hooves"), it is now considered a spelling error by most sources and should be avoided.
