Yes, why do security lights do that? I'm halfway up our steps before it comes on and by then I'll have stepped on at least two slugs and goodness knows what else.....confused

Just been out to the bin and stood on a slug - big and squishy. Yuk!!!

Bet mine are as big as yours jeni! Loathsome things. I hope the hedgehogs finish them all off grin

I've got lots of snails, too. When I walk up my front garden path, the security light doesn't come on till I'm a few yards from the front door, by which time I've crunched several snails when it's wet weather. Yuk! grin

I wish I had some! I'll bet I have more and larger slugs and snails than anyone else?

I see hedgehogs at night when I'm out in the garden with my dog. I've left gaps under my fence for them to walk through. I have lots of slugs and they've obviously found out where they can get a feast!

Well I thought i would bump this rather than starting a new thread.
baby hedgehogs in garden. I take the view that if a hedgehog is out in the daytime it is usually in a terminal state and nature will take its course. Or starving.
One baby hh in very poor state died last week (eyes covered in parasites etc)
There is another one out there now (midday, albeit gloomy) that looks more sprightly. I have just given it some hh food (like dry cat food without the fish) which is is woofing down.
It is small, and late in the year. I have read that unless they reach a reasonable weight they have no chance of surviving the winter. To feed or not to feed? I don't feel inclined to do anything more dramatic.

This evening at my Luke's school DGS5 we have set up in the garden shed a survival area in case any hedgehog's are brought in over the next few week's and the local Vet has agreed to help free of charge if need be,how nice is he ?

Glad you raised this, glamma. We know we have at least one hedgehog living in our garden so we're leaving all the piles of seasoning wood in place over the winter. We have a lot of piles of wood because making piles of wood is one of my jobs! I'm cutting down huge rhododendrons bit by bit. I shred the smaller branches but keep the thicker ones. Once seasoned they will be fuel for our wood burner.

Unfortunately, I live in an area where one can't burn anything ...let alone have a bonfire in November. sad

Years ago when I worked in a vets, we were brought all the stray hedgehogs that were found in the area. It is very satisfying to have them brought in and to care for them until they were back to full health and could be released back into the wild.

Take care when you are moving logs and piles of leaves as they could be nestling underneath.

Can I raise awareness and encourage everyone to look when organising Bonfire's for Hedgehog's as many may be sleeping beneath them,if you find any at all inform your local RSPCA at once and they will care for it until it can be released back into the wild.
