This morning I took my beloved 12yr old collie to the vets believing she had a tooth problem. The vet did a thorough inspection of her mouth and discovered the 'bleeding tooth' was in fact a huge tumour, too big to be operated on, an hour later my best friend was put down, without the opportunity for me to say goodbye. I'm in such shock, it's all happened so quickly and I'm sitting in the kitchen surrounded by her full dog bowl and her lead on the floor.
I'm sure some of you GN's will understand when I say I have never felt so alone in my life

Hi Goose

You have now done all you can for Mystery.
Mystery will not want you sad and there are other dogs wanting homes.
I would try to repay Mystery for all his love by giving a new dog a home.
I can assure you he will be the best dog in the world within a few days.
He will never be better than Mystery but he will be soon equal.

Hi Everybody

A vet at the surgery I go to lost his dog on Sunday evening ( a westie ).
I knew he was going to look for a new dog on Monday.
I have just heard he has found a cairn terrier. He will be collecting him on Saturday when he will be old enough to come.
I don't know the dog's name yet but I don't think it will be Andy or Andie as that is the vet's name.
I am sure the vet will now feel better knowing a dog is on the way even though he has not got him yet.
I am looking forward to meeting the new dog and I am sure Andie is as well.

Andie is a very special dog as well.

I suppose resting is a bit unlikely Goose our two collies were scattered on Maenporth Beach in Cornwall together with a third one who died several years before. I doubt if they've stopped chasing the seagulls yet smile

That's a very touching end to a sad story Goose. Lets hope it's not an end but a new beginning. smile

Also, to all those who have a dog they love and to all those who've lost much-loved dogs, we understand each other's feeling flowers

Just to let you know I passed the vets receptionist this morning and she said the vet is going to Nottingham to collect his dog tomorrow.
She said knowing him he will be up there before 9am so the dog will be leaving early.
She said that he will be bringing the dog in at some point for the staff to see and she says that if I have not seen him before I will get an invite.
I think if that happens I will have to go without Andie as he may kick up a fuss.
I hope the new dog will be happy but I am unsure if he will be totally happy having a vet as an owner.
The vets do have photographs of their own pets on the notice board.
All of them own a dog with the exception of one who has a cat.
Oddly I did know a man who had a dog boarding kennel business and he had his own dog.

Oh Goose, so sorry to hear... flowers

debsmum Tue 30-Apr-13 18:35:24

Dear Goose, never underestimate the loss of a pet.

I know just how hurt and lonely you are right now. In January this year I had to make the awful decision to have Chloe, my pet cat of 16 years put to sleep. That was hard enough but I was with her at the end, unlike you, which must be so hard to bear. Remember you are not alone we all understand and ((hug)) you.

HUNTERF Wed 01-May-13 18:17:53

Just to let everybody know the vet has got his cairn and has named him Peter.
I have seen a photograph on the wall of the surgery.
Some people may say the vet was a little quick to obtain another dog but I am sure his dog will have a happy life and it is 1 more dog in a good home.

I am so sorry for your loss. When my spaniel died I was inconsolable for months, I had lost my pal.I had him cremated and have his ashes in a casket with his name on. This was about 9years ago and I still seventeen ably to bury him' He's in the cupboard by my side where he always was and always will be.

HUNTERF Wed 22-May-13 19:03:38

Goose

Have you got another dog yet?.
I don't think I could live without a dog for over 5 weeks.
Andie is so much fun.

Just to let everybody I met the vet today and he is happy with his new dog and I think the dog is happy with his owner even though he is a vet.

Aka Tue 28-May-13 22:52:39

No, I didn't. She just snuffed it for no reason I could see. And no, we didn't either 'cos we don't know the cause of death.

HUNTERF Fri 31-May-13 10:40:01

Aka

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your chicken.
Any animal can be a pet and I can see it can cause a lot of upset.
