Emergency cover for pets.

I was having a chat this morning about Gerry's post with an elderly lady and a thought crossed our minds.
She was saying that she went in to hospital earlier this year and another member of the family had her dog.
What is concerning her is on the last 2 weeks of August all her family are going to be abroad.
If she suddenly got took in to hospital is there any official service which would look after her dog until kennels could be arranged?.
I have given her my mobile number and I have said in that sort of event I would get her dog out the house and take him in for the duration of her hospital stay and I am sure other members of my family would help if I was not available for some reason but I think we can only give her a 99.999% guarantee.

Frank have a look at The Cinnamon Trust, they are a charity specifically for older people and their pets. They offer "fostering" for the pet if the owner has to go into hospital etc.

HunterF, very kind of you. Bentley's post was silly, of course. But as said, he makes a good point, and that is that if you have children.... or indeed pets, you should make plans for emergency care just in case, and this is of course even more important for the frail and/or elderly. It should be a legal requirement imho - but it is certainly a practical and moral one.
I hope anyone reading this thread who has a/pet/s will give it serious thought, if they have not got a plan in place.

My pet insurance provides for boarding my dog, should I be hospitalised, but fortunately she can also stay with a few different family members, if necessary.

Thanks.
I have phoned the Cinnamon Trust and they say that they would phone volunteers in the West Midlands if help was needed but again there is not a complete guarantee but they are sending the info through.
I think combined with my family I think her dog will have as good a cover as most dogs.

I might register Andie with the Cinnamon Trust but I think things would have to go to the extreme before he needs them.

I can see what you are saying about compulsory emergency cover but a dog can be a commitment for 17 years and a lot can happen during that time.
Andie had 2 people in the house at the start but he now only has 1.

I think the biggest risk Andie has is me being taken ill on holiday. If this happens I would hope the hotel would find somebody to look after him in the short term while my family is on its way.

Andie has pet insurance which covers him if I have to go in to hospital.
The insurance would look after the financial side but really there would still be the need for the initial arrangements to be made.

Yes, Frank it's best to have a standing arrangement that can be activated as soon as it's needed. I'm fortunate, as the person my dog boards with will take her at a moment's notice, and as her business is dog care she has insurance and meets the requirements for them to pay the boarding fees.

phoenix I think Blue Cross have the same scheme and all Vet Surgeries will have the numbers of foster parents in an emergency,we where on the list of three surgeries when we did fostering I think we had three dogs that came to us when their mum or dad went in hospital.

I am pleased to see you have contingency arrangements for your dog.
None of the dogs in our family have been in Kennels so we do not have that luxury.
We are just relying on the fact there are several people and it is very unlikely we would get a position where nobody would be able to take a dog in.
Andie's breeder said if an emergency happened they would come and take him back to Luton.
I am still in contact with the breeder and I send an up to date photo to them occasionally. I know the breeder was 70+ at the time we got Andie so I am not sure if she drives now.

Frank I think there is probably no such thing as "100%" but from what I hear the Cinnamon Trust would move hell and high water rather than let anyone down.
