Everyone knows about my JR Barney and how he came to us rescued from the dog pound 5+yrs ago we have just this morning found him in his basket and he had died in his sleep,we are so so upset but look back on his last years as a bonus to us and to him a most faithful friend one could ever wish to meet.

nellie here's another (((hug))) for today. It's so tough knowing what you do and living with your companion in the last weeks and months of their lives. There'll be lots of lighter times, too, each time you get those moments when the puppy in Millie appears and she shows you she's enjoying herself and you. flowers

glammanana Wed 05-Mar-14 09:51:59

Dearest nellie I'm so sorry I missed your post yesterday flowers for you and ((hugs)) enjoy your time with Millie xx

nigglynellie Wed 05-Mar-14 09:35:55

No, we didn't expect the results till Monday, but they came through yesterday afternoon and the vet rang us straight away. Trouble is Millie seems so well and lively, (have I said this before?!) it's hard to believe that she is SO stricken. This morning we are going to the vet to pick up some pain killers for her, and we're seeing the vet on Monday, and we shall just have to take it from there as to how we go along. I'm afraid OH and I aren't doing very well, but are determined to do our best for Millie. Lots of hugs from me to to everyone having a hard time. No more animals for us, I don't even want to own a glow-worm!!!!

(((hugs))) to Nellie and all going through such a hard and sad time right now flowers

Anne58 Tue 04-Mar-14 23:17:25

Sorry to hear your sad news nellie , I thought you weren't going to get the results until next week confused. I hope you enjoy your remaining time with Millie and that you have many happy memories of her. flowers

Deedaa Tue 04-Mar-14 22:20:18

So sorry nellie the only consolation is that Millie won't be worrying about the future. I hope you can still have some happy days together. flowers

nigglynellie Tue 04-Mar-14 19:34:11

You are ALL very kind, and hugs from me too to all of you who have lost beloved pets. Margaret, I think a cat is just as heart-breaking - my last little cat died aged 7, years ago now, but I was heartbroken at the time and still miss her. We have had SO much kindness this evening both from you, and close friends. We are trying to be positive not easy!) for Millie's sake, as she always knows if I'm upset and I want her to be happy.

Soutra Tue 04-Mar-14 19:30:52

nellie it will not make it any easier but so many of us can feel your grief and sorrow. Remember Millie knows nothing of this, she just knows that you love her and that she is safe with the people she loves most. You are her forever family sad

MrsM Tue 04-Mar-14 19:30:39

Ah - I'm sorry. I replied to a historic OP and a recent last post but missed nellie and her sad news of Millie. I am sorry that yoiu have received such sad news. I hope you can come to terms and do whatever is necessary to give your old friend the best possible and most timely end

MrsM Tue 04-Mar-14 19:27:19

What a lucky dog to spend his twilight years with you and what a really lucky dog to just leave this world peacefully in his sleep - isn't this what we wish ourselves and everyone/every animal we love?

Hugs to you though - a horrible shock for you but time will pass and the pain will ease and you will think of him and his memory with a smile rather than a tear.

Margaret - hugs to you too

sigh We wouldn't have them if we didn't love them and if we didn't love them it wouldn't hurt so much

MargaretX Tue 04-Mar-14 19:23:15

Ohglamma I am so sorry. I had a thread about my beloved ginger tom cat who died 4 weeks ago. It is such a sad time,-heartbreaking and just when I thought I was getting over it, the sun came out and we so MISSED him when we were busy in the garden.
I know that with a dog the relationship can be much closer. Unfortunately the dog in our family is also 14 years old.
My thoughts are with you at least he died in his sleep.

Nellie, so sorry. flowers

Agus Tue 04-Mar-14 19:11:43

Oh Nellie I know how you are feeling. (((Hugs)))

nigglynellie Tue 04-Mar-14 18:41:24

Thank you everyone your support is invaluable. Tegan, How awful for you, completely dreadful, I'm so sorry, but really glad about your daughter's cat.

Tegan Tue 04-Mar-14 18:40:08

Oh no; virtual hug winging it's way to you. I hope it's a slight consolation that so many of us understand how you feel at this time flowers....

Charleygirl Tue 04-Mar-14 18:11:21

I am so so sorry to hear that devastating news.

whenim64 Tue 04-Mar-14 18:10:30

nellie I am so very sorry flowers

nigglynellie Tue 04-Mar-14 18:07:47

I'm afraid my hopes have been dashed. Millie has osteosarcoma and the outlook is bleak. We have about 1 month with Millie. I can't write any more.

Tegan Tue 04-Mar-14 18:06:52

Oh please don't raise your hopes. I had a dog diagnosed with liver cancer; I then took her to another vet for a second opinion and he said she just had hepatitis. Turned out that the first vet was right so I went through several weeks of, first of all thinking I would have had her put down and shouldn't have done, then anger with the second vet for raising my hopes only for them to be dashed again. I was in turmoil for weeks. Couldn't stop crying. Still can't believe my daughters cat is still alive though. He's really old. I think it was his age that made the vet so sure; the opposite happened with my dog with the second vet being convinced it wasn't cancer because she was so young [they'd both seen the blood test as well, but reached different conclusions]. Maybe Millie had a problem with the tooth because there was a tumour there?

nigglynellie Tue 04-Mar-14 17:41:52

Tegan, You have raised my hopes! Millie had a tooth removed about a year ago, and about two months ago a flat pink growth appeared in the 'hole'. One vet thought it was an infection caused by the top tooth fitting into the gap, if you see what I mean. Another is convinced that it is a cancer. Of course I fear the worse, but may be just maybe it's not as bad as I am fearing. We get the biopsy results any day now, + a more distinct view of the x ray, which was not very clear. Fingers crossed you are right!

Tegan Tue 04-Mar-14 17:18:11

Is it definately cancer? I'm only asking because my daughters cat had cancer of the jaw and we were all very down about it [I even bought a condolences card] then, when the biopsy results came back it was a abscess [the vet had been absolutely sure it was cancer].

nigglynellie Tue 04-Mar-14 17:08:18

I am sorry Glam, it's one of the hardest things one has to bear, and my heart goes out to you. As I've posted on another thread, my old Millie has been diagnosed with cancer in her lower jaw. Next week we will get the results of her biopsy, but it's not looking good. My main worry is to keep her out of pain, and to know when enough is enough. It's going to be a hard road and we shall need a lot of inner strength to get there and do it right.

Thistledoo Wed 22-Jan-14 09:28:52

Oh Glam I have just seen your post, so have come a bit late to this.
My heart goes out to you, I know well how you must be feeling having lost such a precious member of your family. You gave Barney a happy and loving home and if there is a dog heaven he will be there running free. Sharing your sadness today. flowers [[[[hugs]]]
