Dog's new friends

For the last couple of weeks, my dog has been snuffling round behind my garden bench, which is against the dividing fence to next door. I've chased her out of there a few times and she has given me those hurt, withering Basset Hound looks. Today, I went out there to tell her to shift and saw three noses peeping under the fence. Seems she's been watching fox cubs under next door's decking. They're away on holiday at the moment, otherwise I would have expected the vixen to move them.

What a busy month she's had - she was on squirrel, cat and magpie guard up to a fortnight ago, whilst the great tits were fledging.

I had to add this one. The white thing on the grass is (or used to be) just a stuffed toy, no need to worry about the carnage. You could see it on the wall in the previous video. One of them has carried it down onto the lawn, but it still causes surprise and delight and gives them some practice in catching and dispatching small prey. youtu.be/w-V9eDrr2_Q

dustyangel I have a lot more shots, but they are mostly boring - the motion sensor sets the camera off, and it takes one minute of video than stops. If anything is still happening it starts again and takes another one minute, but it takes nearly a second to get its act together so there are sudden jumps in the action.

Sometimes the little so-and-sos have rushed past so fast all you get is a blur, then fiftynine seconds of background, sometimes you get a few seconds. Sometimes they come back and do something interesting after you think they have gone, and sometimes you can hear squeals and yelps off-camera. I have to watch all of it to note the good bits and delete the rest, and make sure I don't delete the parts where they have returned part way through the minute. Not to mention the times the battery runs out and I get absolutely nothing. I am sure that is when all the best bits happen.

All this takes time

I love these videos Elegran. We saw a fox, sitting having a look around, at mid-day today in DD1's garden. She has filmed cubs playing in the snow there before now. She said she thinks they probably live in the 'wild bit' at the end of the garden. GC used to make lovely dens there when they were younger.

Link not working for me Elegran

My local fox cub litter is getting bolder. I planned to get shots to show where mother was jumping the wall to visit them, but caught more than I expected. There is a six-foot drop on the other side of that wall, but with a compost bin and a water butt beside it. https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=MzuJVlKyj_4

Picked our dog up from hospital yesterday - he is sooooo weak but hopefully is now on the mend - 4 tiny meals a day of rice and boiled chicken or fish and keep up the fluids. He looks all sort of haggard and thin and needs a bath - which when we do will be the first one in his life!!

I know this is not strictly about dogs and foxes, but I have a maternity colony of pipistrelle bats in my roof. I like watching them leave a dusk. The most I counted in one evening was 73, and that was just from one side of the house. My son does not care for the youngsters, who sometimes make a wrong turn and end up flying round his room. I've never found out how they get into the house though.

Yes, Iam64 having a scent hound is fascinating to observe. I've got an all glass back door overlooking the garden and she sits there watching out for the slightest gust of wind, then goes out to smell the air. It's amazing that she can get half an hour's pleasure from sitting there with her nose in the air, gathering information! She patrols her territory and alerts me about squirrels, magpies, wood pigeons and cats, but doesn't bother about small birds.

Iam64 Thu 19-Jun-14 08:06:40

I love the way in which dogs alert us to anything unusual as they patrol their surroundings. We have grey squirrels, such clever little beasts. They can circumnavigate any attempts to keep them from eating the bird food in the gardens around us (including ours). Our resident dogs see the squirrels as part of their job. The dogs day includes patrolling the garden first and last thing, chasing off any intruders such as squirrels, the odd cat, mice and those huge genetically modified pigeons that seem to be taking over the world around here.
Nell sounds a true nose hound When. My dogs are led by scent, but also sit close to the windows looking over the back garden. They love guarding us grin

I think the foxes have moved as my dog has stopped snuffling under the fence to look for them in the last couple of days. Maybe they'll return when it's their turn to raise a family. A vixen used to whelp in my far back garden where her cubs could play in complete privacy. It would be nice to think these cubs are related in some way.

Iam64 Wed 18-Jun-14 20:49:23

What an interesting event When, it sounds fun. I especially like Mrs Neighbour subversively feeding the cubs, and not telling Mr N. grin

Elegran Wed 18-Jun-14 14:57:19

Not when you are looking, Anno but the chances are that your garden is part of the territory of a fox or a pair (maybe the big dog fox who felt secure enough to sunbathe?) and they check it out regularly.

You need my motion-sensor camera set up for twentyfour hours to catch everything passing by. You might be surprised.

annodomini Wed 18-Jun-14 14:34:09

I was surprised on morning to see a big dog fox sitting sunning himself in front of my shed. When my former neighbour had chickens, they were taken several times and she thought there was a vixen on the other side of the brook, feeding cubs. I often hear them at night, but they don't frequent my jungle garden.

Maybe that's it Elegran toys for the little ones! My DH thinks it's because they just take things first and investigate them later, however I prefer the first idea. smile

Elegran Wed 18-Jun-14 14:15:12

They were seen taking home a stuffed toy tiger cub too - something for the little ones to play with? I suppose shoes and gardening gloves smell good and can be chewed. Not that they need any toys, they have plenty of fun practicing their stalking techniques and catching and chewing each other.

dustyangel I know the fox story sounds bizarre, but over on the chat thread under 'odd phenomenom' I see that Elegran says the local foxes have a penchant for socks and shoes that they find! The mind boggles.

my dog's new friends at the moment are all in the same ward as him in hospital!!! Started off with d&s which the vet confirmed but he took a turn for the worst this morning and he ended up in hospital with his bloods being taken now he is on a drip - luckily the vets still think it is a very bad dose of a gastric bug probably something he ate.

We were in Devon last week and on the last day pottering around on a beach I realized that I couldn't see him so wondered round a rock and there he was finishing up something - yum yum goodness knows what so may have been that.

Unluckily our insurance is not for lifetime ( will rectify that asap) so we have to take the hit - goodbye holiday in September!!!!

dustyangel Mon 16-Jun-14 14:07:10

Roses, your fox story grin

rosesarered Mon 16-Jun-14 09:11:05

I like seeing them around now and then, but I wouldn't encourage them by feeding them.
Agus you are right, it is the most upsetting aspect of cat owning, seeing all the carnage they cause to wildlife, even though it's a natural instinct.

Glad to hear that the fox family is thriving. Perhaps she hasn't moved them away from the house because she can see the TV from there and wants to watch the football grin

Well, the fox cubs are still around and the neighbours are back from their holidays. Their grandchildren were playing on their decking yesterday and shrieking whilst jumping in and out of their paddling pool. I told her that the cubs might be there for a bit longer and she said 'well, I'm not telling D - he'll be pulling his face if he thinks foxes are under there. I'll just keep him out of the way!' She puts food down at the end of the garden for them now. I'm puzzled to know that they haven't been shifted by the vixen. She must be used to the suburban lifestyle!

Is Poppy a dog or cat glamma? Unusual behavour isn't it? A few years ago, when we had 2 cats, they were both rather scared of the squirrels and gave them a wide berth.
Fox cubs are lovely whenim64 [ I know not all welcome them]. A week ago, after the GDC left in the evening, I was tidying up the garden and saw a furry thing lying at the end of our drive, went towards it when a fox appeared, it's a long drive, and the fox reached the soft toy before I did, picked it up and trotted off with it in his mouth.I didn't chase it, no point, too fast for me, and it vanished over a small wall and into the churchyard opposite.I keep quite a few soft toys here for the DGC so didn't worry about losing one, but did wonder what the rest of the fox family would think when it reached the den and dropped it's prize in front of them, a medium sized pale blue 'Igglepiggle'.grin Mrs Fox may shriek ' but I sent you out for a rabbit you idiot!' men and shopping eh? We have regular fox visitors now, but didn't until about 2 years ago, I quite like seeing them about.

We have squirrels who arrive in our garden every morning from the big park further down the Road,Poppy seems to think they are her "personal & private friends" and sits waiting for them at 7ish every morning they do not run from her just sit and munch on the nut kernels that we leave out for them.
