Limping doggie

I took my dog out for a walk around the park at the weekend. She was fine, although she does pull on the lead, making her front legs dangle a little and all the work on her back legs. However, when we got home and she had rested a while, she was limping on one of her back legs. I have kept her restricted in her travel kennel and she now puts her leg down with weight on it but sometimes it seems like it still catches and she lifts it again. I will obviously take her for a check up at the vets if no improvement but has anyone else had this with their dog? Do you think it is a pulled muscle? If it was worse, she wouldn't put weight on it, would she?

I've felt awful and upset about this as I wanted to make her feel good with the walk, not hurt, and it breaks my heart to have her in the kennel and not cuddling with me as much.

Check her paw first to make sure she hasn't got a thorn or something in it. Or torn one of the claws.
How old is your dog? if she's getting on a bit it could be arthritis starting in the hip joint. Our dog is 12 and she gets that quite often. If she's a young dog it could be a pulled muscle but that should clear up.
See if it gets better within 1-2 days and if not ask the vet.
I wouldn't confine her, as you're doing, but could be wrong.

ps dogs quickly learn that if they lift their paw in a pathetic manner they get a big fuss made wink

Can she still jump up on things as she used? (Eg back of the car, I wouldn't suggest for one minute she goes on the sofa!). My DD2's working cocker pulls horrendously on the lead (only cure, pieces of cheese in her pocket) and had to have an op on the stifle joint as he damaged the ligaments. But he couldn't put any weight on his leg. At all. Your dog may just have strained the ligaments so it might be worth a trip to the vets to get her checked over if she doesn't improve in a couple of days.

My dog has had a limp a couple of times, from jumping off things like a toddler slide and out of the car. It's improved with rest after 24 hours, and I've checked her hips, legs and paws, especially between the pads in case of thorns, glass or suchlike. Otherwise, she would be down at the vets having it looked at if no improvement in that short time.

If she doesn't walk on it ok by teatime today, I would say the vet needs to have a look at her. Hope she's ok.

Well if it is one leg it could be a grass seed - they are real devils and travel all over the dogs body so it is best to get it seen too asap. We had one such a couple of weeks ago and the vet said that, that afternoon he was operating on a dog where the seed had traveled to the dogs lung - I sound a bit alarmist on reflection but I hope you get my drift?

Definitely check the paws, but if no better a trip to vet
I agree about the pesky grass seeds - they have cost us a fortune- Staffie - seed stuck in ear GSD seed stuck up nose !

Thanks to all Maggie is much better today, well, she was yesterday but busy with stuff yest to come on, but I do appreciate your posts.

I have checked out her paws and there doesn't seem to be anything in, I will have another look though. But she bounded at my brother when he came yesterday afternoon, seemingly ok. I'll just take care with her for next few days because we (me and her) are escaping to the seaside for a weekend soon and I want her on top form for that.

She is a Maltese/Yorkshire cross, five years old and she's the world to me. She's going to have to have some more training to not pull on the lead. Even though she is tiny, when she's pulled for a while, it pulls on my back. So to sort it would make our walks more comfortable for us both. I should have done it before. My fault.

She does go on the settee and my bed, but I do think keeping her in her kennel for a time has helped as she constantly moves around and doesn't sleep much during the day. She certainly lets me know when it is her bedtime for her, lol. But she is jumping back up, sat next to me right now, bless her.

Thanks again for your responses. I'm not a run to the vet person, obviously if it were an emergency I would, but I do think a "sit it out and see" usually results in her getting better. When she had her booster last year, she went quite flat for a few days, never happened before, but a different vets. I nursed her better after contacting the vets and she was well after a few days. (I used to be a nurse). Back to the old vets for her booster this year. Even if it does cost more. smile

Glad she's better, Rubylady. Dogs are so keen on jumping and whizzing round on a sixpence, it's easy for them to pull muscles before we can stop them. My dog likes to lie at the top of the grandchildren's little slide so they chase her off, but I heard her yelp when she did it once too many times and she limped for a couple of days.

Thank you when. Yes, she seems back to normal today, playing hide and seek with her new "get well" toy.

Accidents are soon done and especially if they are a little dog. I'm sure your dog enjoys playing with your DGC, they do love their little games, don't they? smile
