It happened suddenly and horribly from epilepsy and whilst very upset I've had to explain to everyone I meet when walking my other dog.
I've been gob-smacked by the people who say they're sorry then ask if I'll get another. Even more tactless was the man when I rang to change my insurance, who finished with, "Have a great day!"

Oh watermeadow

I love my doggies more than life itself and can't even bear to think of losing them.

A big cyber hug from me to you today (((hugs)))

I just saw this today;

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead.

He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble... At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.

When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.
When he was close enough, he called out, 'Excuse me, where are we?'

'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.. 'Wow! Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked.

Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up. 'The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

'Can my friend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the traveler asked.

'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.'

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.

After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence.

As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?'

'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.'

'How about my friend here?' the traveler gestured to the dog.

'There should be a bowl by the pump.'

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.

The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog.

When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree..

'What do you call this place?' the traveler asked.

'This is Heaven,' he answered.

'Well, that's confusing,' the traveler said. 'The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.'

'Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell.'

'Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?'

'No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind.

it never gets any easier no matter how many times it happens - so sorry for your loss watermeadow sad

Solazure Sat 23-Apr-16 13:01:06

How sad. They are part of the family. I lost my cat a few months ago after 17 years. He was unique as he was blind from birth, such a character. I still look for him. Big hug x

I'm so sorry, those of you missing your pets. flowers

Ikwym about the house seeming empty, Italiangirl. I came in from town today and, seeing the kitchen door open, thought 'Ah, good, someone has let Willow out,' before remembering that we have no need to close the doors now. sad

italiangirl Tue 19-Apr-16 12:12:32

So sorry for your loss
We never forget our pets when they go but eventually we remember the lovely happy times and the sadness and distress fades
I don't think my Shadow has long to go but know I'll be devastated when it happens so just enjoying him while I can, even clearing up his accidents. Told him I'd adapt some tena pads for him this morning. He didn't look impressed poor old boy
Sending loving thoughts X

So sorry to hear about the sudden loss of your beloved dog, Watermeadow. It is always such a wrench losing a pet, especially when it is unexpected. I have just lost our 14 year old cat. He had bowel cancer and was wasting away before our eyes. I brought him home from the vet for the family to say goodbye before the end and it was painful for everyone but we were able to come to terms with it quicker. I still miss him sitting on my knee and purring every evening.

I think people who haven't owned and loved a pet can't appreciate how difficult it is to lose one. sad

rubylady Mon 18-Apr-16 03:37:33

I am also so sad for you Watermeadow.

People can be so insensitive, just think that they probably don't realise what they are saying and are just saying something for the sake of it. I had the same when I had a miscarriage, people straight away said "Oh, you can always have another baby" as if I could replace the one which I had lost. Unbelievable.

That's so sad Watermeadow flowers

My old dog has just had an eye removed and for a few days it was touch and go if he would survive. He has pulled through but I've been beside myself with worry over him.
We do love them so, don't we?

TriciaF Sun 17-Apr-16 15:30:30

They're always so pleased to see you, and never bear a grudge. (Well maybe occasionally when you're trying to put tick treatment on them.)

SueDonim Sun 17-Apr-16 15:04:31

Thank you. Shysal and Watermeadow.

All these memories from so many of you. I like to think I'm a pragmatic, down-to-earth type but my goodness, our beloved pets enrich our lives so much, don't they?

grannylyn65 Sun 17-Apr-16 12:51:25

I love that poem, where is it from?

Juggernaut Sun 17-Apr-16 11:46:35

Watermeadow
So sorry to hear of the loss of your much loved dog.

Grieve not,
nor speak of me with tears,
but laugh and talk of me
as if I were beside you.....
I loved you so --
'twas Heaven here with you.

Daddima Sun 17-Apr-16 11:38:14

We still miss our wee dog two years on, but we had to make the decision to end his suffering. We'd had him for 14 years.
My thoughts are with you.

ginny Sun 17-Apr-16 08:45:19

Sad for you x

Jane10 Sun 17-Apr-16 08:36:31

So sorry to hear that hildajennj. We love our pets so much and love hurts. Its the price we have to pay for all that they give us I suppose sad They're worth it though!

hildajenniJ Sat 16-Apr-16 22:40:27

My beloved toy poodle was killed by a car one night when I was at work. I never got to say goodbye. It still hurts even now, 18 years later.

MargaretX Sat 16-Apr-16 22:35:23

So sorry to hear about your loss, so sudden and unexpected. Of course he can't be replaced ever. Some people just don't think before making a comment. But it will get easier with time, try to take comfort from your other dog who must be sad as well.

TriciaF Sat 16-Apr-16 22:13:19

So sorry to hear about your dog watermeadow, when you weren't expecting it.
I can't bear to think about life without our little sweetheart. She has had epileptic fits too, when she becomes over- excited, it's very scary.

Iam64 Sat 16-Apr-16 21:33:50

Sending sincere condolences on your loss. It's over three years since our much loved oldest dog died. Dogs are family aren't they, to be mourned x

whitewave Sat 16-Apr-16 09:11:28

Oh watermeadow it is one of the worst things. We lost our dog in 8th February 2009 - he is never forgotten. We do have another dearest Cairn but our Westie holds a special place in our hearts.

watermeadow Sat 16-Apr-16 08:56:04

Thank you all so much for your kind words.
It's good that we can share each other's sorrow. Hugs back to everyone who is grieving for a beloved pet.

Witzend Sat 16-Apr-16 08:48:05

I am so sorry - losing a beloved dog is awful. Yes, I remember people asking when I was going to get another, as if I'd just had the telly nicked or something, Some people just don't have a clue, do they? xx
