Poor little Minou

Early this Summer we noticed a young Siamese cross cat lurking around with a front leg hanging off. We were really upset, but he disapperared and we thought he had died. Then just before we went off to Italy - he re-appeared- the leg had fallen off and it looked awfuls and so sore. I fed him and watered him and made him a nice den in the garden shed- but he was very wild and scared and I couldn't get anywhere near him. Thank goodness my lovely neighbour agreed to look after him whilst we were away. I went to the vet and asked him what to do- and his reply was 'let nature take its course- cats can survive major injuries if they have shelter, food and water' so we did.

Lately he has been coming to the kitchen door to 'beg' first thing in morning and early evening- and I've been talking to him a lot- and recently he's got closer and closer. 3 days ago, I cooked him some fish, and, with head bent down and hand out stretched, sitting on kitchen doorstep - I put fish in my hand and waited. He made a lot of calling noises- but finally took the plunge and I felt him taking the food from my hand. Yesterday I was able to cuddle his head- and tonight - after his sachet of cat food, I did the same with fish in my hand- and he ended up on my lap and purring for the first time.

Very moving- I cried to be honest. Stump is still very red but seems to be granualting and tissue growing well around it. Hopefully he will be inside before really cold weather and snow comes- but neighbour and myself will be spending a few hours this week-end making a much warmer and waterproof den to put at the back of shed. And hopefully we will soon be able to catch it to take to the vet to see if anything can be done to help. Bless his little cotton paws.

Siamese cross, 1 year old. He managed to hide and cover his poo perfectly this morning, in the litter tray. He has a white patch on the side of his chin and a white band on back legs- otherwise Siamese- dark tale and nose, blue eyes.

Great job, granjura. You AND the vet.

He looks very comfortable.

SueDonim Wed 19-Oct-16 20:53:45

He looks a bit Birman/colourpoint to me, Grandjura, with that lovely coat of his. smile

whitewave Wed 19-Oct-16 20:58:25

1 year blimey you've got him for life!!!!!

Elrel Wed 19-Oct-16 21:32:03

What wonderful progress Minou has made in your care!

granjura Wed 19-Oct-16 21:47:41

whitewave lol - yes, with Pudding being 23 and doing so well- little Hoppy will probably outlive me. Better make a will for him then.

millymouge Wed 19-Oct-16 21:50:39

He has got a secure future now, bless him.

Charleygirl Wed 19-Oct-16 22:07:48

I prefer the name Minou.

granjura Wed 19-Oct-16 22:17:08

Yes, I think it will stick smile had to put his collar on tonight and he was NOT a happy cookie. He started to pullat stitches, so we just have to be cruel to be kind.

Tegan Wed 19-Oct-16 22:22:05

Oh no; not the cone of shame....

granjura Thu 20-Oct-16 09:51:49

Well he didn't like it at all- but it just had to be done.
Poor thing used the litter tray last night and managed to get poo on the inside of the collar when scratching sad

In fine fettle this morning- he seems to know how to hop on 3 legs like a pro- lots of good food and cuddle and sunning himslef on the pouf in the sunshine by the kitchen door. He'd love to go out- but he'll just have to wait a little longer.

merlotgran Thu 20-Oct-16 09:56:58

So sad that not one of those lovely grannies who have been so unpleasant on another thread have had the grace and kindness in their heart to send him their best wishes. Ah well- just shows.

What a shame to spoil a lovely thread with such an unecessary and unpleasant comment.

Hilltopgran Thu 20-Oct-16 10:03:37

Just caught up with your thread, what a lovely action to take on and care for Minou, hope he continues to recover. He will always be special for you. Cats are so independent, they are very careful who they choose to be special to them.

granjura Thu 20-Oct-16 10:27:04

yes Merlot, I agree. Sadly on GN you can't delete or edit.

DaphneBroon Thu 20-Oct-16 11:11:58

Who has said that, and where?

granjura Thu 20-Oct-16 11:13:13

I did - regretted it and asked GN to delete.

DaphneBroon Thu 20-Oct-16 11:17:19

Ah,I see, a "changed my mind" button would solve so many problems. Post in haste, repent at leisure? smile
I have to say this is the first time I have dipped into this thread, I saw the title and feared the worst ?
Glad the little cat's future looks so much more promising.

granjura - you should feel proud to be 'the chosen one'! When Purdy Puss walked into my house 2 years ago, 10 weeks old and with 3 large ticks my vet (Peter from The Yorkshire Vet) said that cats knew a mug when they saw one. It sounds like Minou has certainly wormed his way into your heart (and bank balance!) as Purdy has done mine.

granjura Thu 20-Oct-16 12:49:38

Thanks- I have never ever chosen a cat or a dog ;)

Tegan Thu 20-Oct-16 13:01:33

I love 'The Yorkshire Vet' [the programme, not the vet blush]. Although I usually end up in tears watching it. Cat's never choose me sad. My neighbour [who's allergic to cats] had a feral cat give birth to a beautiful ginger kitten in her garden. I suppose she would [thinking about it] avoid a house with a dog. I would never have another cat [too close to a main road] but wouldn't turn away one that knocked on my door.

granjura Thu 20-Oct-16 13:43:07

And never had a 'posh' cat before, but Sue you are totally right. I thought the white paws were because of the cross- but having looked at pictures, he is totally Birman colour point and the vet agrees.

I just cannot believe how well he is post massive traumatic surgery, such a trooper.

shysal Thu 20-Oct-16 14:40:31

He has probably been in pain and managing on 3 legs for a long time, so may feel no worse or even better than pre-op. How wonderful that you will have brought his suffering to an end very soon.

Charleygirl Thu 20-Oct-16 14:47:42

Cats apparently have a high pain threshold and it sounds as though this little mite is in heaven in his new abode. Once the collar comes off when the stitches are out, there will be no stopping him but he will never forget your kindness and repay you with love.

SueDonim Mon 24-Oct-16 14:59:43

How's Minou doing now, Granjura?

I only know about Birmans & colourpoints because we had two colourpoints at one time. Birmans I think have slightly shorter coats and white socks. Our cats very long hair was difficult to care for, which is why we've had short-haired cats since. Colourpoints are very docile and great to have around children, though, as they never scratch and ours rarely hunted.

Our late lamented Birman Yum Yum had quite a stocky body shape not like a Siamese. Ragdolls can also have white paws and that shaded coat. Our Grandkitten is a Ragdoll. They can grow quite large!
