Can anyone recommend a good sofa protector for a leather sofa. I have just bought one which is absolutely rubbish, nasty quilted shiney material that does not stay in place on the sofa.

I suspect that pets and leather sofa's aren't a good mix. Can you keep the door closed so dogs/cats can't go on the sofa when you're out. It's never too late to train a dog not to get onto the sofa but I'm not convinced you can train a cat to do anything.

I think you may have a problem in that most covers slide off leather furniture - we have leather sofas and haven't found any that stay put. We just let our dog sit on them and use a leather cleaner as necessary.

The only thing I can think might help is to tuck the cover in where the back meets the seat.

It's not just sofa protectors that are a problem; I bought a leather sofa as I wanted something that was easier to keep clean, and cushions just slide off it. The only thing that stays put is a large black beanbag.

Tegan - I misread "large black beanbag" for "large black Labrador". smile

If you are feeling flush look on the Orvis site.

We have a car protector and it is excellent - it comes with side protectors as well.

Large black Labradors certainly like staying put on sofas.

I'll be honest, other than a woollen throw or tartan travel rug which doubles a a comforter when I feel like a lie down, I don't really like sofa protectors. What are we protecting them for?
Leather often improves with age, I actually like "distressed" leather best too. Shabby chic is really my style, with less emphasis on the "chic"!!

Great comment Maw! We had next door neighbours in the mid 60's who had all their carpets and furniture covered in thick plastic protectors. I was about 16 and totally puzzled by this - our house was always a bit distressed I suppose, 3 children, dogs, cats, visitors and not a lot of cash. I just couldn't understand why you wouldn't all cuddle up on the sofa, plus various pets and watch tv together. Mum was very diplomatic and said some people like to look after their furniture so it lasts a long time. I remained puzzled.

Dunelm do a quite nice teddy bear fleece throw,we where undecided about it on our leather sofa's so I bought the two smaller ones they worked fine I just tucked them into the sides of the sofa's when the dog came in wet and they stayed firm, when they weren't being used they where folded neatly over the big arms, handy to throw over the legs on a cool evening.

There are quite a few specialised pet firms who supply the protectors. We have three dogs who were allowed on the sofas but I got tired of the constant washing of covers etc to say nothing of hauling the dogs off the sofa so people could sit down. We bought new sofas and have trained all three dogs to stay in their beds on the floor.
Problem solved and less work for me.smile

Thanks for all your comments re sofa protectors. Sadly I can't imagine retraining Patch not to sleep on "his" sofa and he certainly doesn't like the new protector. Think I will have to rethink this and possibly have a go at making one or, more likely, this will be in the too hard tray!

I just put the dog bed and blanket on the sofa and that seems to do the job ??

Cherrytree59 Wed 23-Aug-17 13:14:06

Ahh smile how cute

To stop throws skidding off sofas using the biggest throw you can find
Then hang half over the back of sofa and sew on weights as you would with curtains.

Cherrytree59 Wed 23-Aug-17 13:14:43

Use!

Who needs sofa protectors!! gringrin
I suppose this had to happen !

Nelliemoser Wed 23-Aug-17 18:41:05

But Hattie and her greyhound cousins take up a lot of room with those very long legs.

People slide off leather furniture. It's not just throws.

I wonder what sighthounds did before sofas were invented? I know I read that oop north people used to use their whippets as hot water bottles for their children [or was it vice versa]?

Iam64 Wed 23-Aug-17 19:58:36

No Tegan, we used those big pot bottles that were previously filled with Sasperella.
Throwing another dog on the bed was Luxury

Tegan2 Wed 23-Aug-17 20:36:18

I thought they only drank sasperella in wild west movies?

Alexa Tue 19-Dec-17 01:02:20

and I thought the point of leather sofas was they are allowed to get dirty. I suppose saddle soap and elbow grease would be the thing.

MrsJamJam Tue 19-Dec-17 07:48:33

Orvis - but not cheap.

Auntieflo Tue 19-Dec-17 08:35:10

What is Orvis? confused

Christinefrance Tue 19-Dec-17 08:43:54

Orvis is an up market mail order firm.
Seems like a catch 22 situation, have pets and be prepared for extra work and mess or have a quiet, clean boring life without them.
