Morning all.

Clutching at straws here, but I have a very poorly cat and wondered if any of you have dealt with the same issue.

She has been retching/gagging since Sunday evening and until yesterday was also flicking her tongue in and out.

Monday we went to the vet and she had exploratories done.

Her gut was inflamed so they operated on her abdomen, but found nothing.

She came home last night and drank some water, but not eaten.

She's on two meds - one anti-inflammatory and Ranittidene (sp?) as she is full of wind.

She spends her time hiding quietly in a corner and wants to be on her own (very out of character, but understandable at the moment).

She is still doing mini-retches, almost like an unproductive burp.

I slept downstairs with her last night and she had a few little wanders around and then settled down again.

Any ideas as to what may be causing this or what else to do? The vet's on standby to readmit her, but he doesn't have a clue as to the cause.

Help please!

oops, am trying to type in unbunged - as in no longer bunged up, but this computer will not let me!

Many years ago my young cat was ill with similar symptoms. However, I knew what is was from the start, she had eaten most of a cotton wool ball! It would not have shown up on X ray so it was lucky that I had found the remains of the said ball and put two and two together. On the vets advise I had to drip liquid paraffin into her mouth every few hours from an eye dropper. This took several days and a lot of patience, I had to wrap her tightly in a towel to stop her struggling and by the end of it she was a small greasy bundle, but it worked. She was eventually 'in bunged' and recovered to live a long life.
Just thought I'd share this in case your cat has ingested something similar.

Lots of cat lovers here! Positive vibes continuing to be sent.

Thank you all so much - GN at its best smile

1974cookie Thank you for that info, I’ll check with the Vet in the morning.

She had a bad reaction to the opiate and it knocked her out, so no eating went on again sad

Vet mentioned a possible potasium deficiency, so is testing for all possible nutrient deficiencies.

She may have to see a specialist if no improvement over the w/e. Possibly a CT scan.

It’s going to be a long w/e!

Thank you all again, you’re really keeping my soirits up smile

I really hope she is getting better Squiffy, poor little girl.

I am glad she is on painkillers, cats will put up with a lot of pain without showing it. Really wishing her well x

Squiffy sending every good wish to you and your poorly pussmog.

Squiffy, this may be a long shot, but has your little cat been checked out for Constipation?
The reason I ask this is because of the retching, anorexia, pain ( Is it in the abdomen ) and finally, the leaking poo.
Is the Poo liquid with no solids in it?
I have dealt with something like this many, many times, but in People and it is commonly known as 'constipation with overflow' ( Animals are no different in this respect, and with this incredibly hot weather, more susceptible especially if they do not drink enough, and some do not, thus becoming dehydrated although not always obvious in the early stages) .
The bowel gets a backlog of poo that cannot be passed. What does happen though is that the bowel leaks faecal fluid which tracks past the blockage. This is the 'overflow'. It looks like diarrhoea, and many people who experience this think that it what it is.
This is not a sign that the bowels are working properly, it means that the blockage is still there and needs sorting out, usually with an Enema, maybe more than one.
Has your little cat had an abdominal Xray?
That should determine if constipation is a problem as the faeces would show up.
I hope your dear little cat will be okay Squiffy.

Can I please add something to anyone giving their Cats dried food.
In this unusually hot weather, I would not do so unless you are absolutely sure that your cat is taking lots of fluids. If in any doubt, add water, or better still, use 'wet' food ie: canned food or sachets and then add a little water to that as well.

Keep us all posted Squiffy, and xx to your little cat.

Hope she recovers quickly squiffy its so hard when they can't tell you what is wrong.
Supervet always says that the licking of lips indicates an animal is in pain.
Get well soon little cat.

Jane10 Fri 03-Aug-18 14:04:53

Unbearable to think she might be in pain. Sending all good vibes.

Waterloosunset Fri 03-Aug-18 14:03:11

Oh Squiffy, the biggest hug to you! She’s in good hands now so try not to worry. I hope they get to the bottom of it very soon. Sending positive vibes and ?

Squiffy Fri 03-Aug-18 13:53:42

Thanks Jane. Yes, she’ll be plumbed in for fluids. Vet thinks she may be in a lot of pain but not showing it, so she’s having a morphine shot as well ? Could do with one myself!

Jane10 Fri 03-Aug-18 13:31:59

Awww. What a shame Squiffy. If nothing else the vet should be able to hydrate the poor puss. I hope that they get to the bottom of this mysterious affliction and cure it. Please keep us posted.

Squiffy Fri 03-Aug-18 11:44:02

Well, back to the Vets this morning sad

Looks as though she's there for the night - luckily I'd packed her overnight bag in case! Not as bonkers as that may sound - she needs special food and the Vet didn't have any in, plus the meds she'd been sent home with previously and a t-shirt of mine to snuggle up with.

Feeling very 'lost' without her following me around and I can't seem to settle down to do anything constructive! I'm supposed to be painting the fence! Daft when it comes to our pets, aren't we?!

Squiffy Thu 02-Aug-18 17:43:14

Coomon?? Common!

Squiffy Thu 02-Aug-18 17:42:48

Posted too soon! Sorry your cat has problems Ethel Thyroid seems a coomon problem when cars get older. Our cat is only four and a half.

Squiffy Thu 02-Aug-18 17:41:06

Ethel Definitely poo! I’m in the process of cleaning carpet and sofa throw and wondering how on earth I’m going to clean the cat - or whether she’ll even let me do it. I’m frightened of hurting her wounds in the process.

etheltbags1 Thu 02-Aug-18 17:17:12

Hope he's ok soon, my cat is 17 and got on going thyroid probs I'm round the bend with worry, also its costing 100 a month for treatment?

etheltbags1 Thu 02-Aug-18 17:15:09

Was it poo, my cat brings up fur balls and they are covered in brown yuk but the centre is solid hair

Squiffy Thu 02-Aug-18 15:05:39

Have been on Poo Patrol as there have been brown patches on the carpet (oh joy!). I’m actually a bit relieved as it means something’s moving - albeit without her control! She’s such a clean cat, she’d be mortified if she realised her standards had slipped.

seacliff Thu 02-Aug-18 15:04:32

Thank goodness for that.

Squiffy Thu 02-Aug-18 15:02:01

Seacliff Our previous cat died from liver disease. She went downhill so fast it was untrue. All our present cat’s tests have come back negative.

Squiffy Thu 02-Aug-18 15:00:29

Nina Vet said throat area all clear, but I don’t know how he actually checked it.

seacliff Thu 02-Aug-18 14:18:23

Hi Squiffy

Sorry I can't help, but understand how worried you must be.

I did a bit of googling and found the attached- really hope it's not that. Don't want to upset you.

Just wondered is it worth you getting a second opinion? Our local vets are part of a chain (CVS) and a lot of them aren't very experienced when there are difficult cases. Sometimes another vet will have an idea what the problem could be.

www.petforums.co.uk/threads/sudden-lethargy-loss-of-appetite-vet-unsure.360707/

Hoping it clears up soon.

ninathenana Thu 02-Aug-18 13:23:22

A fine fishbone would not show on an x-ray this maybe stuck in her throat/palate.
You say they operated on her abdomen. Did they check the pharynx/aesophagus ?

Jane10 Thu 02-Aug-18 13:12:39

Put soft cat food on the back of her her paws? The vet gave us stuff to give our boy that way. It's a rare cat who could resist the urge to clean it off.
