Vet's prescriptions.

My 16 year old cat Bugsie has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, and will probably be on medication for the rest of his life. For a month's supply from the vet it cost me £38 after his VIP discount. I checked on line and found that exactly the same quantity and drug would be £13. The company needs a written prescription before they can issue it, probably monthly.
Does anyone have experience of asking for prescriptions from their vet, and are they reluctant or do they make it difficult? The saving would be so large, I feel I need to take advantage of it.

Hi, I imagine it would be difficult to get a script to use elsewhere. But I agree you ought to be able to get the cheaper meds.

I thought vets were required by law now to give you a prescription for free if you asked. Maybe someone who’s done will pop along with info.

shysal your vet will give you a prescription, but they will charge you for doing it! Check with them as to how much they will charge, then you can do an accurate price comparison.

A word of advice, they will probably try to talk you out of it, along the lines of " would YOU take drugs that you had bought on line, when you don't know if they are the real deal? " etc!

Your vet will give you a prescription without quibble. My vet did this happily. In the end I decided to stay with the vet dispensing the drug as it as for my elderly labradoodle and I didn't care about the cost to be frank, I just wanted the best for my much loved girl (rip lovely x)

My daughter has a prescription issued by the vet and made up at the local pharmacy. She saves a fortune

The vet will charge you for a repeat prescription so be firm with them about the length of time allowed before it runs out and you have to pay them again.

You can ask for a repeat prescription from your vet but the price seems to vary greatly between practices.
