The cat was walking up the drive when he noticed three crows down in the rockery.

He chose one and ran towards it. It flew up into the air, and the cat just arched his back slightly and jumped off all four paws and rose elegantly upwards for nearly four feet.

He looked just like a cartoon of a UFO taking off!

He landed neatly (without the crow) in the exact spot he took off from.

I've seen another cat do something similar once. She was sleeping curled up on my lap when DH, who was putting up shelves, started drilling in a brick wall. Cat woke drifted three feet upwards and landed not on me, but on the adjacent desk to the computer table I was sitting on.

It's got a name! Jumping with all four legs is called prinking.grin

*Prinking’ that’s a new one on me! Lovely word and describes the action so well. Cats are amazing to watch when they’re not asleep of course!!!

I learned the word in a book about dogs that I read years ago. It was something to do about love, and it was very moving.
I've been googled and can't find anything about prinking in relation to jumping animals.
And now I'm going mad trying to remember the damn book!
I think that Temple Grandin wrote the introduction.

Found it!
'Dogs never lie about love' by Jeffrey Masson.
Highly recommended.
The author is American, so it may be a US term.

One of my cats does that leap occasionally, indoors, for no reason, he just springs in the air grin daft cat.

I'm sure I heard the word 'prinking' when watching a documentary type programme about antelopes?

May be wrong though!

FannyCornforth Wed 07-Oct-20 14:55:16

Yes! You are right! I think I've heard it in relation to deer.
Lambs are great prinkers!

Auntieflo Wed 07-Oct-20 14:56:24

Apologies, it is 'pronking'.

Google Sprinkbok pronking.

We had a cat who did this once. She arrived through the side gate about 3ft off the ground and gave a trespassing dog the fright of it's life! She was known as our ninja cat ever after.

Is that why they're called Springboks?

I wish I could leap even six inches these days.

Ah, pronking. Thank you Flo.
That's why I couldn't find it.
Still prefer prinking though!

One of my cats does it when bats are flying in the garden. He knows when they will appear, and goes and waits on the top step at dusk.
