One of my cats does it when bats are flying in the garden. He knows when they will appear, and goes and waits on the top step at dusk.

We had a cat who did this once. She arrived through the side gate about 3ft off the ground and gave a trespassing dog the fright of it's life! She was known as our ninja cat ever after.

The author is American, so it may be a US term.

I learned the word in a book about dogs that I read years ago. It was something to do about love, and it was very moving.
I've been googled and can't find anything about prinking in relation to jumping animals.
And now I'm going mad trying to remember the damn book!
I think that Temple Grandin wrote the introduction.
