Biological washing powder is supposed to help. Don’t use anything with bleach in it, as that triggers cats to try and cover up the chlorine smell.

Cat litter is also a good idea. Leave it down if you can so it can absorb as much as possible. We use silica cat litter and that’s much better than the usual type at absorbing smells.

Vinegar kills the smell. But you've then got to get rid of the smell of vinegar.

Pet shops sell enzyme sprays that take away the smell of where a pet has been.

Biological washing powder always worked for us but you can now buy very effective enzyme sprays from pet shops.

Pets at home sell a special liquid. Pet odour remover or something like that.

Definitely a biological washing powder solution, it kills off the 'fats' that keep the smell so strong. Such a terrible pong, I can never understand why people grow flowering currant which smells very similar!

I think people who keep their tom cats 'whole' need to come and smell what they do in other people's houses. Our neighbour had a tom, we had two girls (spayed), and we suffered terribly with him spraying and night time fighting, she threw him out all night. When I told her he'd yet again sprayed up my curtains she said 'he never does it in our house'. That's the point, he does it everywhere else, especially where there are female cats. He regularly sprayed our front door, came in the cat flap into the house and sprayed up the corners of the room, it was dreadful. The final straw was when he pee'd on my pillow. I went to see her and she agreed I could take him to the vets, I was a cat protection volunteer at the time, and had him done. He lived a much happier and longer life.

This cat was neutered. He seems to have been stressed I think.

I have used a product called Urineoff, available on Ebay, but it isn't cheap. Vets and pet stores also sell similar products.

My elderly female cat has just started peeing on carpets. She has kidney disease and getting B12 injections - don't ask! Anyway main point is it smells - not of tom cat but smells of pee and no one would want that on their carpet. We have the pets at home spray, and vanish for carpets and seems to help. 2 litter trays and puppy training pads also helping.
