Adopting a cat

I would try the smaller animal rescue groups. There are literally hundreds of cats looking for a new home especially black ones. I’m sure you will find a lovely moggie very soon. Good hunting.

There are lots of cat ladies about who rescue strays. You may find one on Facebook mums group or next door.

Our last cat came from the RSPCA (4years ago).
We were upfront and said we intended to get a dog at some point in the future, and they were happy to let us adopt a cat that they thought was suitable to live with a dog. We did indeed get a dog, and all was fine.
On the RSPCA site at the moment there are ones suitable to live with a dog, so might be worth having a look.

I really NEED a cat.
Not practical to have one, though.
I have to spend my time looking at those needing a home and sighing.

None of the shelters would give me a cat because of where I live. I saw an ad in the vets from one of these cat ladies and her friend got me my cat.
Check what personality your cat has before you decide. My son was put off the female he had chosen and persuaded to take her brother as he seemed more lively.
This cat is a fat lump with no personality who doesn't play or cuddle whereas mine is lively and a great companion.

Persevere. I really hope you manage to find one soon. I know how you feel. I was bereft to be without a cat for the first time in 50 years when Baz died so suddenly. I'm so glad we rehomed our two recently. They are a complete joy.

Have you tried Cats Protection?
All my cats have come from there as either young cats or kittens. Always have 2 cats in Residence.
I don't have a Dog but my daughter when living here had 2 Dogs one crackpot Frenchie and a Chihuahua/cross. Both cats ruled the roost.
Never been asked if I had a Dog, I'm sure they will be about to help, or advise.

Conversely the dog refuges will state if the dog for re-homing is used to cats - I'm in France but it might be different in the UK.

So hope you find an adult cat who is used to well behaved dogs. Tell us how you get on.

Our Minou arrived all by himself- about 5 years go, with a leg hanging off. Some of you may remember me talking about him- still going strong and happy on his 3 legs (after amputation of the infected stump). We love him so much.

Our Cats Protection will home SOME cats with dogs, where the dog is used to cats, and they think the cat is likely to be accepting. Ask them to put you on their books.

You could also ask your local vet as they might have a contact. Also try a query on your local Facebook, there might be small local charities in your area.

My lovely cat is from the RSPCA she has been with us three years now. Our previous cat had 13 years with us, she came from a local cats rescue. On both occasions we were not asked if we had a dog , as it happens we don't. I think the rescue centre are being very picky , we had cats and dogs living together when I was a child. You need to look else where , perhaps speak to your vet he/ she may be able to help. Such a Shame when you are an experienced owner who can provide a loving home for a cat who needs one ! My local Cat Protection is exactly the same as Seacliff's. You are more likely to get one through a local vet or a much smaller charity than RSPCA and CPL. Good luck, please tell us if you are successful.

I am in a similar position but I may go down the fostering route.

Fostering is such a rewarding job, unpaid of course. You either have the cats in a spare room in your home, or the charity provide a run in your garden. They also pay for food, vets bills, sometimes heating costs.
It's always a risk that you might keep one yourself though!

Watermeadow, not sure where in the country you are but our local rescue centre, Woodgreen will rehome cats with dogs.
They have 18 cats on their website at the moment and they their histories attached.
Woodgreen is just outside Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.

I got my older cat from Cats Protection and have two dogs. There wasn’t a problem at all. I told them I had always had cats and dogs together and they accepted that. Older cats are wonderful pets and I think it’s harder for them to find loving homes.

Have you tried Pets4homes or Preloved?

I too suggest you ask the local vets. Sadly some people have to give up their pets when moving to sheltered accommodation or care homes, and will usually prefer to rehome a beloved pet than have it put down.

You could also try putting a notice up in the local supermarkets or community centre or library, stating that you are looking for an adult cat that is used to dogs.

If you live in the country, perhaps consider an adolescent cat that was born on a farm - it will be used to dogs.

My DD had been looking for a kitten for a long time and finally advertised on her local FB page she had 3 replies within the next hour and now 5mth old Hugo is the boss of their house.
