Much as I would love to cuddle and stroke them I dare not pop in or I may sneak them to my home.

My cat Tara was put to sleep nearly a year ago and much as I would love another cat if I was hospitalised there is nobody who would feed and care for it. I am thinking of fostering and then if there was a medical emergency a quick phone call and the cat (s) would be cared for. I am 78 hence my trepidation.

How lovely! We rehomed two 6 year old cats in September and have never looked back. They are a complete joy and easily the best thing we did this year.
I think we've both done the right thing watermeadow. How are they coping with the Christmas tree?

Lovely to hear about your adopted cats. We adopted our cat two years ago, they said she was 10 but our vet said older. So she's now about 12/13. She was almost wild and so afraid but she's gradually opened up and is very attached to me as I'm here with her all the time. She lets my husband pet her but he can't pick her up. It's been a long haul trying to get her used to a home. Although she is very clean and never has an accident around the house, always uses the litter tray. She's very vocal and quite demanding, she has her routine and expects things to be as she likes it. She's a bit greedy but rather fussy and sometimes eats with her paw, cleaning it meticulously afterwards. She's not keen on dried food but if she does have it she flicks them one by one out of the dish then eats them.

Cats can be such a joy.

Aveline they are absolutely gorgeous but with their beautiful long coats will take a lot of grooming by you. They look so happy.

Charleygirl we thought that too but, somehow it's not an issue. They seem to manage their own coats beautifully. I do sometimes try to groom them and they politely put up with it but it doesn't seem to make any difference!

Charleygirl, the RSPCA had a scheme whereby the cat or dog owner could register with RSPCA and arrange to have the animal immediately taken into care if and when the owner dies or becomes disabled. I hope this will help you to get another cat.

watermeadow, I'm worried about their diet - so please take advice from your vet. I once took on a Siamese with 'secondary hyperthyroidism' due to malnutrition.

That sounds really good Caleo. Charleygirl it's so sad that you're living without a feline companion. Would this suggestion help?

Hetty, vets receive minimal training in nutrition and I know what cats need so make sure they are getting a good diet. Supermarket pet food is junk food with little meat and lots of fillers. My two have lots else but it’s mostly fresh chicken.
To older grans who hesitate to take on a cat - I looked for middle-aged cats and know that my 4 cat owning daughters will look after them if I predecease them. They are also a lazy breed, British Longhaired. They are mother and son and always been together.
