Lack of cat vaccine

Yes my cat’s vaccinations was due September but due to shortages had it in December. Vet reassured me a few months wouldn’t make any difference as he would still be covered.

I assume that means they will have to have two inoculations with a month between as when new kittens.
Very costly and of course they can’t go in a chattery until these are done.

Sparklefizz , I am hitting the 5 month mark now for our cat and like you not over impressed with vet however if there is any kind of waiting list I feel I best stay put as joining a new practice would perhaps mean I would be last on their list!! confused

My cat has reached the end of the 3 month extension. It has now been 4 months and she is on the cancellation list but I have still heard nothing. I am not very happy with my vet's practice anyway, and thinking of changing and maybe she'll be luckier elsewhere.

Rang yesterday to arrange for my cat.
Still working through backlog from October.
They will ring when available but say three months later will still see her covered.

Thanks for replies interesting to hear. I contacted vet once again and they are still awaiting supplies. Very frustrating.

No shortage here in Australia but they charge like wounded bulls.

My cats were due for their booster last November. I was told to ring back in January but they still haven't got any vaccine. I live in the Reading area.

My cat's booster appointment yesterday was cancelled yet again because apparently they didn't receive their supplies. It has been postponed repeatedly since September. The vet says all vets are having the same problem. I now have an appointment next week.

ohh interesting

I had my cat done in November. No shortage in south London.

This was a reminder thank you for me to get my Cat vaccinated.
She a nightmare to find in the warmer months so I had to cancel her planned appt in Oct. As she was Awol again.
Told she must be done in January. Phoned lunchtime and found out that she needed to come on ASAP as hers expired yesterday. They booked me for 3.30, as she was around due to weather, had to shut her in a room to prevent escape. All sorted now.
So this lack of vaccine must be regional

No-one has mention which vaccination this is, but if it is against cat's flu or any of the other vaccinations that are renewed annually, then adult cats, even the old, that have been regularly vaccinated are usually quite safe from infection even if not vaccinated again on the due date.

This does not apply to a rabies vaccination, nor, I believe, to FEP.

If there is a limited supply of vaccine it makes good sense to reserve it for kittens that are only just old enough to be vaccinated. The same would apply to puppies if the distemper vaccine is in short supply.

Quite another thing is, that cats are only at risk of catching any of the infectious feline diseases if they go out, so if any of you keep cats that never do go out, then you don't need to worry.

I would be exasperated too if the vet kept sending reminders after telling me that the vaccine is in short supply!

GirlyGran Mon 10-Jan-22 09:43:06

Perhaps the lack of vaccine is a regional problem but it is a worry not onlyy for the health of my cat but I am unable to use a cattery without proof of vaccination. Hope it is sorted by June when we have a holiday.

I didn't know there was a shortage of vaccine. I was told that they are struggling with staffing the surgeries so delaying boosters for up to 3 months. I have to get one of my cats to a vet today due to a burst abscess on her bottom for the second time in 6 months. I intend to ask for her one month late jab to be done. This was permitted for my other cat on a thyroid/kidney check up.

I miss not having a cat and I am sorry that you are having difficulties in getting the vaccines.

Rang my vet last week for booster for my cat , was given an appointment for two days later - no problem.

LadyGracie Sun 09-Jan-22 19:05:26

Cat not car!

LadyGracie Sun 09-Jan-22 19:05:09

My car is so overdue his booster that I’m going to have to start again, when the vet has any.

Sparklefizz Sun 09-Jan-22 17:44:29

Yesss! My cat's booster was due in September and I was told to ring in October, then November, then after Christmas. Each time I phone I am put off for this reason, yet the vet's practice continues to send me reminders, and yesterday I received a letter telling me off because her booster was overdue!!confused and angry

I was told that they are using any available vaccine for kittens who have had nothing at all, whereas apparently older cats have immunity lasting for approx 3 months after their last booster.

GirlyGran Sun 09-Jan-22 17:22:53

Just wondering how many other cat owners are experiencing this.
My cat was due his annual booster in September and vet continues to advise of there being a severe lack in supplies.
