Adopting an older dog.

When my children were small we had a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy. He was a much loved family pet. He died at the age of 14 and I was heartbroken. I have never been able to consider having another dog because I still can't forget that feeling. I know that many of you will understand that loss. However, when watching Paul O'Grady For The Love of Dogs last night not only did the programme feature Cavalier puppies but in encouraging people to adopt older dogs Paul said Why contemplate the hangover when you're at the party. I thought it was a good quote and it reminded me of the great party that we'd all had with our lovely Rolo. I'm not in a position to adopt at the moment but it is now something that I feel more able to do when the time comes.

I just want to say how much I have enjoyed reading this thread. Dog lovers are such interesting people and this has given me so much enjoyment to know where is a veritable army of dog owners, fosters and adopters out there.

My late dh and I always had dog home lurchers and now I have the last of our four darling dogs left. He is 14 and had heart failure which is costing me a fortune in meds. I absolutely dread the day he will go as he is the last of our hounds. I cannot imagine life without a dog and the thought of coming home to an empty house... Will definitely consider another rescue, from UK or abroad.

I will never understand people who say they’ll never have another dog because of the pain of losing one.
Death is part of everyone’s life. A pet is part of our family but we know they will die.
Would you never marry because your spouse will die or go on holiday because it will end?
If a beloved pet gave you years of joy then embark on another to give you more of the same.
