My old Jack Russel is 14 and her hearing is no longer sharp. She still likes to have a really good run about when out walking. The problem is when she is in the longer grass and can't see me she doesn't hear the whistle any more and starts to panic. I have seen her turn towards the path home. It's pointless shouting to her. Hand signals are fine so long as she is in sight.
Do any of you lovely dog owners know if there is anything I can do? At home if she is out of sight she responds to hand clapping or feet stamping.
I don't want to confine her to lead walks as I would never be able to walk her far enough to use up the energy she still has.

My dog is a 14 year old terrier Cairn and exactly the same, I’ve developed a series of arm gestures which makes me look rather like a windmill, other than that it is running (well at nearly 80 saying I run is sn exaggeration) after him. But he and I seem to have reached an accommodation and he stays reasonably close unless a rather fetching bitch walk by.
