American Bully

"The American bully has quickly become one of the more visible dog breeds in the UK in recent years.

The breed is not recognised by any of the main dog associations in the UK, meaning there are no figures on ownership rates in the country. However, the dogs’ frequent appearance in the news, often under tragic circumstances, suggests they are more prevalent than ever.

The American bully, a newer version of the American bulldog, commonly comes in four variations, standard, pocket, classic and XL. They vary in size, with those taller than 50cm (20 inches) being classified as an XL.

It is the larger American bully that has been responsible for half of all dog-related deaths in the UK since 2021, killing nine people including three children.

While it is not recommended to own an American bully as a first-time dog owner or if there are children in the household, the two people killed this year by the breed were experienced dog handlers."

Please warn anyone you know who may be planning to get one of these dogs.

We have a dog walking field next to us. The owner collects 6 dogs at a time in her van before bringing them here. By the time they arrive the first dogs she has collected have been in the van quite a while. We hear the dogs barking from inside the van and when they are released they are, understandably, over excited and out of control.
The field is also rented out to the public to walk their own dogs and the vast majority have at least 2 dogs whereas in the past most dog owners only had one.
I used to be a dog lover. I'm not anymore

Eddiecat, I can’t walk my dogs in the park I’ve enjoyed for fifty years
Four vans, 6-7 dogs each so 28 dogs running round, unstable packs
My dogs run on safe enclosed fields - I’m fed up with it

MayBee70 Sat 16-Sept-23 20:15:56

Do these dog walkers pick up all the poo when they’re exercising multiple dogs?

Iam64 Sat 16-Sept-23 20:24:51

How can they//

As l mentioned on the other XL Bully Post, there has been an XL Bully running loose on our estate since Friday.
I called 999, not particularly interested as it was dog on
Dog attack. However this changed after l spoke to the police on Saturday and told them the dog had in fact bared its teeth at me when l was screaming and kicking out at it. It's now classed as an out of control dog.
It is still out this morning as another dog walker told me in the dog walking field that he had to hold his Yorkshire terrier above his head to stop the Bully getting to it.
There was someone with it this time but he did nothing to control it.
When I returned home, I once again called the police gave them a detailed update. They said they would look into.
I told the lady that l am going to the newspapers tomorrow. I am sick of being afraid to go out and needing to carry a weapon to defend myself and my dog.

Please contact the safe neighbourhood officer at your local council.

On Facebook just now an article about a woman who owns an XL Bully has referred to them as nanny dogs. It’s Staffies that are known as nanny dogs, not XL Bully’s. So much misinformation.

There was a man on TV this morning who described himself as a dog trainer. He has four of these American Bullies. He also has small children. He showed pictures of one small child cuddling up to one of the dogs. It made my blood run cold. They also had a dog expert in who has worked with dogs for 40 years. He described these dogs as killing machines (or a similar phrase). You could tell he was horrified that this man had four around children.

One of the people killed by these dogs was an experienced dog trainer I believe.

Iam64 Mon 18-Sept-23 19:57:38

MayBee, if you’re referring to the dog Walker - she wasn’t an experienced trainer.
No experienced trainer would walk that number of dogs together

MayBee70 Mon 18-Sept-23 20:36:29

No. It was another person, a trainer. He was mentioned by someone in a tv interview by someone who was disagreeing with someone who said the dogs were perfectly safe if they were with a knowledgeable person.

I’m sure owners are important but so is breed characteristic and the temperament of ancestor dogs

I was shocked to see on a FB post one of these dogs being trained on a private field to attack a handler wearing a padded arm sleeve as per Police Training Video's these people pay for this training what is wrong with them for goodness sake it is not normal.

Dog trainer friends tell me xl bullies are bred, trained to be aggressive and get their ears mutilated in Eastern Europe. They’re bought by owners here.

So many photos popping up online in recent days of “cute” photos of these dogs lying snuggled cheek to cheek with the owner’s baby. I can’t get my head round the fact anyone could think that was safe. It could be something as simple as the baby sneezing to startle the dog and an unthinkable tragedy to unfold.

Picture in our local paper, woman with three of these dogs, allowing them to lick her few months old baby girls face, disgusting, and saying she would rather get a criminal record, than give up her "boys". They are not boys, they are dogs with a level of killer instinct.
Who instructed those dogs to attack, no one, the dogs just took off at random. Muzzles and harnesses come to mind.

I wouldn’t like to be in the vicinity of this rally planned for Birmingham

Maybe they’ll all end up fighting with each other ( which wouldn’t surprise me).

My blood ran cold today. I was outside our charity shop where I volunteer. A Nissan size care pulled up. The male passenger jumped out and the I saw an X Bully try to jump into the front.
The woman driver shouted at it to get back in the back seat where there was a toddler about 3/4 years old.

Now it says the XL Bully walk is considered irresponsible and dangerous, and people are being encouraged to wear t-shirts or wave banners instead. I'm sure some will still bring their dogs though, so we'll just have to see what happens. If these dogs really were as friendly and docile as they say then there wouldn't be a problem......

According to the DM worried owners are trying to get rid of them and the shelters are inundated. You have to wonder how many of these creatures there are around? I thought there were just a few but they seem to be everywhere which is very worrying.

It’s illegal for a dog to be in a car unrestrained so the dog shouldn’t have been able to do that.

Just looking at this photo' makes my blood run cold

You can see why it's the dog of choice for criminal elements - but why do people with small children risk having them as pets?

And if I hear one more person say their Bully is "gentle" and "loving", I think I might scream...
