I'm sorry for your loss. It's so painful.
We had two dogs who were exceptionally attached to each other. When the old dog's time came, my son took the younger one out for a long walk, out of the way.. Vet then came out to house, dog was put to sleep, then buried on our land . Because of foxes and badgers, her grave was 3 ft deep, filled in, turf relaid, then covered in a huge stone.
All done while younger dog was miles away.
Son arrived back, younger dog jumped out of car, immediately ran a hundred yards up the hill to the grave, and lay beside it howling.. In the next three days he spent many hours just lying beside the grave whining. He knew, and was grieving.
I quite believe that! What a sweet story.
Several years ago we had our very elderly pony put to sleep in the field and buried there. After the digger left and the ground was flattened our two dogs and a donkey who shared the field all stood round the grave with their heads lowered. It was like a scene from a Disney story. All animals are very, very special.
