I love cows

My uncle had over 250 steer and after spending my summers with them I just love them. I choose not to eat their kind now but don't mind if others do. Does anyone else love these creatures?

I’ve been chased by a herd of bullocks, I’m quite sure they were being playful but I didn’t want to hang around to find out. It’s the only time I’ve ever thrown myself over a five bar gate and if it happened now - no chance grin

Cattle are Ok so long as there are no cows with calves or a bull around. There is Rickerby Park in Carlisle where you walk through a field containing heifers where they tend to either stare at you or wander off when walk past. Steers( neutered male cattle) tend to be quite harmless as well. However I 'd never go into a field containing Limousins, and certainly not ones with calves or were a bull is present, as they are nasty.

My garden backs onto farmland with a herd of Limousin cattle. I just love the bull, who is very gentle with his ladies. I call him 'Red' due to his colouring (Red Bull!). He leans over my fence and eats the leaves off next door's willow tree while we have a chat.

I feel the same about sheep. I love them, especially the herdwicks. I discovered that some of my ancestors were sheep farmers in the Lake District of England , maybe it goes through your blood. I don’t like eating lamb, though I am not strict about it.

I like sheep too and found my ancestors were shepherds.

Ditto with lamb.

Anywhere not nowhere.

We were caught by a herd of cows, it was terrifying, my neighbours brother, a farmer , was killed by cows, and I avoid going nowhere near them.
However Esmerelda the cow is very cute.

I don't like them at all. A friend was chased by some and she was very frightened. Another farmer friend had his shoulder dislocated by one. I don't like it if I encounter them on a country walk. Many people are injured by them each year, a few fatally.

Cows are potentially dangerous. I never now walk through a field with cows.

I’m trying to learn to draw.

I've drawn this cow for you.

I’ve got a long way to go… (till the cows come home you might say).

Her name is Esmerelda.

Esmerelda is lovely!

Yes but be cautious. Too many people, even farmers who handle livestock, have been killed or injured and not all had calves. Respect their space.

I like them but I have a healthy respect for cows. I wont go through fields with public path if cows are there especially if they have calves. A few years ago woman on holiday locally was tossed out of the field and killed when a cow took a dislike to her. Farmer was taken to court. I have a great soft spot for pigs.

That is a wonderful memory. It would make a lovely painting.

An old man I used to visit lived in a flat whose windows looked directly out onto a field where cows graze. He made particular friends with one cow who used to put her head through the window, whereupon the old man would feed her a ginger biscuit.
The memory is making me smile.

I love animals, just been up to let a friend's dogs out and found their 2 rams had got out, managed to get them in after ringing to find where the feed was and being told to be careful, especially of one of them, but I treat all animals with respect, you can never be sure, and they were fine. A friend had 60 gorgeous Alpacas which I also loved. Oh and I'm vegetarian but don't expect others to be

I’ve always loved cows. Both my parents came from farming families and I wondered if it’s in my DNA

There used to be a few cows in a small field near my old house despite being in the city. My old dog was fascinated with them from puppyhood and they used to lick his face through the fence with their giant tongues. They were used to being petted by slightly courageous passers-by (and many, many children, obviously). They were dear souls and I missed them when they were moved away. Many a happy head scratch have I given over the years.

We had a herd of Dexters in the adjacent field. The bull was known as Junkers. He and the cows would eat the cut grass from our lawn mower and loved pears. They would actually drool when they saw the lawn mower. When Junkers rubbed his bottom against the fence we used to tell him off as he could have easily pushed it down. He would sulk and turn his back, It would take him a few days to come round again

As a child I used to wander through fields of cows, quite unconcerned. I didn’t realise they could be dangerous. Luckily I survived without incident.

Mostly it is fine. But occasionally it isn't The local woman who was crushed by a herd of cows was very severely injured and will never be the same again.

Just reread your post MayBee70. Sorry I thought you were vegan. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I would like to be and I applaud anyone that can live a vegan lifestyle. I do try to eat as little meat as possible. COW upset me so much. I’m glad I watched it but it stays with me in a way no other documentary ever has.

Don’t want to put a damper on what is a lovely thread, but I saw the documentary COW a couple of years ago and I’m still upset by it. I’m not vegan, not even veggie although I try not to eat much meat. A farmer friend once told me that cows are more intelligent than horses; not sure how true that is. The field at the end of my partners garden has Aberdeen Angus cattle. I watch the calves and have a little chat with them when they come up to me. There were some really young ones this year and I watch them playing together; they seem to have special friendships. When they eventually remove the calves their mothers will call to them for many hours. It’s heartbreaking but I feel that beef cattle actually have a better life, albeit shorter in the case of the males, than dairy cattle, as the calves stay with their mumsMy partner saw a cow chase away a fox that walked across the field one day. I reckon that’s why cattle seem to run towards people with dogs? The field is part of a pilgrim route which cuts right across the middle of the field which worries me as it is full of cows, calves and sometimes a bull; I would never walk across it given that you’re walking between the cows and their calves!

Another vegan here MayBee70. I’m having the same thoughts as you.
I could never make myself watch all the documentaries regarding the meat and dairy industry. Just the thought of what these poor unfortunate innocent creatures have to endure is enough to keep me from eating them. 🌱💚

Our chickens lived on vegetable peelings mixed with some bran which we bought in a pet shop.
