I HATE selfish fishermen

Those who ignore the dangers of abandoned fishing equipment to marine life and other animals.
My dog swallowed a fishing line on the beach this morning, and the hook is lodged in his stomach. My poor boy has had an xray, an endoscopy and now stomach surgery. I have paid out nearly £2,500.
Selfish, inconsiderate fishermen.

Thank you for the latest comments. 12 hours after the procedure he was starving hungry and bouncing around again. I'm in awe of the vets who treated him, as afterwards I read how many dogs die from this. Our saving grace was that he had 2 metres of the fishing line still hanging out of his mouth so we knew from the start what had occurred. Here's a few additional photos to make people aware.
He is very cross he can't run free, but I'm not taking any chances.

What a sad position for your poor dog to end up in due entirely to an idle and inconsiderate person.
I hope he makes a swift and full recovery.

Beeb Thu 19-Sept-24 14:25:39

Sorry. wrong thread! Hope your dog recovers well

Beeb Thu 19-Sept-24 14:24:33

Hotter and Vionic are comfortable. Recently on Amazon I’ve seen ‘ women’s dance shoes’ that look comfortable - Character shoes can have a solid heel and aren’t too high or expensive. I haven’t bought any though, so just a suggestion.

Cateq Thu 19-Sept-24 14:00:55

Aw that’s awful poor dog. That is one of my pet peeves, people who leave the debris behind without any consideration to others.

So glad dog is all right. And totally agree about irresponsible fisherkids too immature to be called men. Visiting my son's boat two days ago and got my feet entwined in fishing line as I walked along the towpath. Luckily DH was there and managed to free me or I would have been in the water. No sign of any fishers - the line had obviously just been discarded and left on the path. Definitely a case for the removal of the licence except that once they walk away no one knows whodunnit.

Dillonsgranma Thu 19-Sept-24 12:51:31

Oh my goodness! How awful. Yes I agree about careless fishermen. The damage they do to marine life is dreadful as well . Dolphins , porpoises and turtles to name but three. Perhaps when on the beach put a soft muzzle on your dog if it’s a scavenger. Very expensive vet bill🤬

Mt61 Thu 19-Sept-24 12:02:51

Should take all their shit home with them & dispose appropriately

Thank you for posting the x-ray, seeing the little hook really brings home the dangers posed to those of us who have dogs. Your vet sounds wonderful, I hope you are soon back out walking on the beach with your lovely dog fit and well.

AGAA4 Thu 19-Sept-24 11:44:25

I'm glad your poor dog is on the mend and didn't have to have surgery. This culture these days of abandoning anything not wanted is causing a lot of unnecessary pain for animals unfortunate enough to come across the rubbish.

MayBee70 Thu 19-Sept-24 10:56:29

It isn’t just fishermen, though. On a recent charity dog walk a lurcher came running back to its owner with its whole side ripped open. It must have ran past a broken bottle or something. Thankfully the St John’s Ambulance people bandaged it up so its owner could get it to a vets. I can’t believe the stuff that people leave behind on the beach. You also have to be careful about dead birds, too. Someone told us his dog was very ill after eating part of a dead bird he had found. It was especially bad when bird flu was around.

Maya1 Thu 19-Sept-24 10:48:17

I hope your boy is feeling much better today.

I hadn't realised how much mess and litter the fishermen left behind until you posted here, disgraceful. And dangerous....

Oreo Wed 18-Sept-24 20:55:13

It really does, it’s a disgrace.
Ah a fish head attached, that’s why, some dogs will eat anything won’t they? Is it a Labrador?

Poor dog, I hope he will be all right.

Discarded nets at sea trapping dolphins and other sea creatures, hooks left carelessly causing problems like this, fishing lines strangling birds or even amputating their limbs.

The fishing industry needs to clean up its act.

Smileless2012 Wed 18-Sept-24 20:15:09

Thank goodness he's alright escaped and didn't require major surgery.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. It has been a long and stressful day, but we got him back at 7 pm this evening.
We were referred to a specialist clinic where a very talented vet managed to pull the hook back up the oesophagus inside a tube so as not to damage anything. That saved him having abdominal surgery which is a major op. He's just a bit drowsy from the anaesthetic.
We think he swallowed the hook because it probably had a fish head attached to it.
Phew!

Hope your dog is soon back to health. It's a dreadful thing . I think Macadia had a good idea about going to the press.

Macadia Wed 18-Sept-24 16:30:13

That is so awful. I hope your poor dog has a speedy recovery. Lucky to have you to take care of them. Maybe you should go to the press to offer this story to make sure fishers know the consequences of their horrible actions.

sodapop Wed 18-Sept-24 16:20:27

Sorry to hear about your poor dog escaped hope he recovers quickly. Your purse will take longer I suspect.
Discarded fishing tackle is a menace to wild life and dogs.
Oreo my dog will swallow anything if she thinks there is food there.

Smileless2012 Wed 18-Sept-24 16:05:23

What an awful thing to have happened escaped I hope your poor boy will be OK, please let us know.

Oh that's awful, wishing him a full recovery xx

Yeah, Poor dog and poor you, what an expense?
Why did your dog swallow something like that?

Tattooedfidelma Wed 18-Sept-24 13:00:45

I agree. We live close to a beach and the pier is full of fisherman and the rubbish they leave behind is unbelievable. My DH spent about 20 minutes, last week, rescuing a seagull that had been caught in abandoned fishing line. He will take a carrier bag on his walks and pick up the rubbish which often contains fishing lines and hooks as well as empty crisp packets, cans and even fish guts. It’s disgraceful and puts people off walking along our beautiful pier.

hazel93 Wed 18-Sept-24 12:52:48

Totally unacceptable , makes me furious also. I live in N. Cornwall where fishing boats go out daily and the fishermen/women are just as angry, constantly finding lines abandoned which they pick up with hooks attached.
Do hope your dog recovers well.

Shelflife Wed 18-Sept-24 12:40:50

So thoughtless! Unbelievable that this happens. Poor dog indeed,I wish him a speedy recovery.
