Advice please . My lovely cat needed a new igloo bed. I have bought her a love new cosy one - she is not impressed! Any ideas that will entice her in ? I haven't disposed of the old one , and can of course make it available again, but it is really past it's best !

We are just beginning the process of adopting a rescue cat. So far we have indicated that we are interested in “Molly” an 11 year old black and white.

None of my cats ever had a bed of their own - they chose their own favourite spots to take a nap (one even took a fancy to a large potato bag tipped on its side). Cats don't make wonderful pets unless they choose to and I don't think fancy bedding is high on their list of preferences.

It's not what you think, it's what your cat thinks!

Being a new bed won't impress a cat. The cat will think why has she got me a new bed, I liked the old one. What have I done wrong. The old bed would have made her feel secure, get a new one and that feeling of security has gone. I used to let my cat sleep where she wanted. Having said that, all cats are different.

My cats slept in plastic washing-up bowls (not used for washing up!). They just fitted, were washable, and I lined them with newspaper which could be easily changed and was disposable.

My cat does exactly the same, snuggled halfway down under the duvet. Oh and woebetide my ankle if I dare to disturb her. 🤣❣️

haven't read all the replies - but if nobody told you yet - if you have an old t-shirt or jumper of yours, wear it, don't wash it and put it in the new bed. Your cat will like that it smells of you. Once he/she is used to the new bed you can remove it again.

I agree it’s the new bed smell that puts cats off things. We just used cardboard boxes for the cat, put newspapers folded up in them then a small folded blanket with a towel on top. They loved them.

We bought our three cats a lovely "cat sofa" each. They look lovely and were expensive! They all ignored them for about 3 weeks and then suddenly all loved then and sleep on them now almost all day long in a little row.

Awww how cute, post a pic of them?

Our cat sleeps on anything we sit on, or on our bed or creeps under the duvet with us. He likes sleeping under blankets or cushions too.

We bought him a nice ceramic bed which heats up (online from Germany) with a cushion on it but he won't use it... I can't sit on it in case it breaks.🙄 Maybe I should put a cushion on it that has his own smell...

My cat loves getting on freshly washed, ironed sheets, so maybe put something cool and cotton and smooth in it?

Let her keep her old bed, but stand the new one in some nice warm place and see what happens.

I am reminded of my aunt who gave me a new teddy bear when I was seven, because she thought the one I had had since my christening was worn out!

I still have both teddies, and I am now 73.

Cats are incredible amazing creatures!

Give puss time to get to know the new bed. Ours was deeply suspicious of a new bed we got him but, after a while, tried it out and now loves it.

I suspect cats work far more by smell than we do. New clothes always seem to have an aroma that disappears gradually or after it is washed. The same could apply to new cat beds.

I love cats and find they generally sleep where they like. Most of my cats have slept on my bed and sometimes try on top of me. My daughter’s cat is particularly partial to the “I’m going to sit on you” routine. I can’t shut the door as she just tears up the carpet attempting to get in. She’s lovely really.

Anyway so glad you’ve solved the bed problem.

Good to know it's not just my cat Bridie!

Bridie22 Fri 17-Jan-25 10:15:28

And if that doesn't work, throw the igloo away and leave the box, the money I have wasted on cat beds and blankets over the years doesn't bear thinking about. 🤣🤣

Shelflife Fri 17-Jan-25 10:09:45

Thank you Sparklefizz that was a great idea - hadn't thought of that .

Shelflife Fri 17-Jan-25 09:55:05

Thank you all for your thoughtful ideas. We have success! I rubbed the old cushion on her new one and this morning I found her sitting pretty in her new bed. Think I can finally bin the original!!

Sparklefizz Fri 17-Jan-25 09:24:20

Put an unwashed item of your clothing in the new bed. She will smell you and be relaxed.

Shelflife Thu 16-Jan-25 21:33:20

That is my plan Cold , 🤞

Is there a detachable cushion in the old bed? Could you put it in the new bed until the cat gets used to it?

Shelflife Thu 16-Jan-25 20:39:08

Cross my mind 🤣

Shelflife Thu 16-Jan-25 20:38:38

I appreciate your replies. As I unpacked the new bed it did cressmy mind she may prefer the box it arrived in! I will put the old cushion in and persevere for longer. If she is still reluctant I will reintroduce her old bed. I agree it is typical cat behaviour ! She is such an amazing cat and so loved but she definitely knows her own mind !!
