Ex Service Dog desperate for a loving home

Not sure if I'm allowed to post this on GN but here goes

Rio is a 5 year old Lurcher and a fully accredited Service Dog. Due to circumstances I can't post on here my son can no longer have him.

He comes from Service Dogs UK who get all their dogs from the Dogs Trust and their motto is 'Saving two lives at a time'
Service Dogs UK can't take him back to help someone else as although Rio is fully trained it takes 9-12 months to train the human and they say he will be too old by then. They are actively looking for a new home for him as are the Dogs Trust.

However time is running out and if we don't find him a home soon he will have to return to the Dogs Trust which would be very stressful for all of us and especially Rio. He's such a lovely friendly dog and is really good with my GDs. I have videos and photos of him if required.

We are in the Bristol, Bath, South Gloucestershire area but would drive any distance to find him a good home.

There are lots of sighthound facebook pages that often put up dogs for rehoming. Sadly I was told yesterday on our sighthound walk that, with so much talk of greyhound racing being banned the kennels are full of greyhounds. Of course, with him being a lurcher you need to be extra careful not to let him fall into the wrong hands sad.

Sadly many lurchers like staffies find themselves in put to sleep situations. Dog rehoming centres are totally full with many dogs being put to sleep. Good luck with rehoming BUT please ensure backgrounds etc are checked of adopters.

Might The Dog's Trust be best placed to rehome him? They're an excellent charity with all the resources and experience to properly vet new owners.

Yes he will be going back to the Dogs Trust if we can't find a home for him.

We were trying to avoid him having to go back in to kennels

I think he would be safer being rehomed by Dogs Trust to be honest. Once you’ve handed over a dog to someone you have no control over what they might use them for.
