Anyone has a Lagotto Romagnolo dog?

Apparently a very old breed, going back to Italian Etruscan days and specialised in duck and truffle hunting.

We thought the dog entrusted to us out of the blue yesterday was a cockerpoo, but no. He has so settled and is good as gold, very quick and perfect recall.

His poor 'mum' returned to hospital 2 days ago and passed peacefully with her family around her at 12.30 today, aged just 65. Yuki will be loved, in honour of her.

Our spaniel used to get seeds in his fur and in his ears, which we had to remove carefully.

They are water dogs, bred to hunt wild fowl, and as you say, truffles! We will be in Tuscany for 2 weeks next september, will have to try this out smile I am a wild shroom forager, so will try with some of our local delicacies.

Huge walk in the woods again today- came back covered with seed all over fur! But he lets me gently pick them out. Storm last night so big puddles on the path- he just bound in and lie flat in the middle. he is truly funny.

They hunt truffles!

I've had a look at some online - they're very curly! A bit like an Irish Water Spaniel, possibly.

Neither had I- I thought he was a labradoodle. He so loves his massive walks in the woods, he goes off on his own, all over the place, but he always comes back and his recall is excellent. A disaster though with seeds from wild flowers- but he is very good at letting me pick the out gently.

Yata has realised he is now here for good, and she is finding his boistrousness (sp?) a bit much, but they will all settle. We have a local friend who knows his well who will move in when we go away for a few days in September, and my neighbour who has a female, will have them when we go to Puglia in October. Pheew. We will have 2 weeks in SE France in November and they will come with us.

Ps I'd never heard of this breed before.

Allira Thu 17-Jul-25 21:31:19

Are you able to post a photo of him?
You don't have to, of course, if you'd rather not.

Forgot to say he and Minou have become great friends. Yata finds him a bit too boisterous, but she is so so good with him.
We have a long stint at home now with all 3, so they can truly bond.

Officially ours from today. His owner phoned and asked if I would agree to adopt him as she knows she will never be able to have him back and has not long to go.

Very sad, she is only 65, has two ACs and a grandson.

He has settled in so well. My neighbour with the female lagotto is very good at grooming and with two os us, sitting on the grass in the garden, and a tube of liver pâté- we now manage to see his lovely eyes, and his mustache and ears have been cropped. On his walk in the woods yesterday he managed to get loads of seeds trapped in fur- and she is coming (with magical tube) to clip the inside of his ears short and mustache and beard cut much shorter. He is pooped as his lady lagotto friend was here all day- and we had a long walk, lots of field running and stream bathing- and she has gone home.

With another friend, we now have a 3 sided exchange club for those doggies. One of them will come here with her dog when we go away in September, and have got sitters organised for 1 week in October.

Always looking for sitters, if anyone fancies a trip to the lovely Jura, both French and Swiss side, with a matching number of days on top before or after, for time to visit region without dogs.

A new leaf turns in our life- and hopefull we will last for the duration smile

I'm guessing snippers or clippers around the eyes is a bit scary for him. I know I shut my eyes tight at the hairdresser when the scissors get close. ✂️

Getting his face groomed here on Tuesday night before we go away, as he can't really see properly. He knows groomer who has agreed to come here, to avoid any stress.

"It's for your own good! You'll be able to see where you're going."

Unfortunately, they don't understand.

We had to go away for a couple of days and a neighbour kindly oved in with her own female lagotto. Amazing how some people are prepared to help, even when they don't even know the person in need. We tried to get the groomer to cut his facial hair as his eyes are 'overgrown' - not a big success. Got some 'rescue' for dogs and my neighbour whom he really likes will come and help next week, as she does her own grooming (well her dog's) regularly. Fingers crossed.

She has just gone home- and it's all very quite here. Yuki is fast asleep, exhausted, since they have been playing and chasing each other since early this morning.

Great to have neighbours we can do exchanges with. We have to go away for 3 days (2 nights) and to avoid stress for Yuki, other doggie and neighbour coming to stay here. Pheew.

Yuki's owner's infection is much better, and she wants to come home next week. She knows she does not have long, but wants to be home. Not sure abour Yuki visiting- I will of course do as she bids me, but it could be quite unsettling for both. See how it goes.

Lol, yes, very detached with large garden surrounded by fields - and the few neighbours all have dogs. All the dogs are greatr with Minou and he stands his ground.

Yes, but he never quite got the difference about the countries, and why I cold not speak Swissish.

Once past picturing France or Spain on a map, I don't think many British people have a clue where all the countries are and who they join on to. You often see people getting such questions wrong on quiz shows. 🌎

Did he manage to deliver the milk to the right house?

Claremont Wed 25-Jun-25 21:44:48

Or Sweden as our milkma called it smile

Allira Wed 25-Jun-25 20:19:43

Switzerland!

Allira Wed 25-Jun-25 20:19:27

I mentioned it to DD as she'd worked in Switzweland on her gap year and yes, she would be more than happy to come but not available, unfortunately. She is already booked up.
