How does your puppy tell you it needs to come in?

(or go out).
Hello. New puppy owner again.
Since I got her at the end of June, the weather has been great, so I've just left the back door open during the day, and she can go in and out whenever she wants.
Of course, the weather has become chillier and rainy and I will need to keep the door shut.
How can I train her to let me know when she needs to go in and out?
Thank you for any advice x

If she’s anything like our dog was, she’ll just woof outside the door.

For “out” she usually stares at me until I say “out” then spins round and runs to the door.
For coming in she scratches the porch door 😬 only gently but I just paint it over now and then, or barks if I don’t hear the little tap/scratch.

Yes, ours will gently scratch the door. Luckily we have a metal screen door.

You could get a set of bells for you door handle; just look up doggie door bells on amazon or google. Train with treats when she hits the bell.

Normally I would wait at the door as we only have a tiny garden so she doesn't have much choice. If I am in the middle of doing some task mine waits patiently for some time and then does a little woof and if tired of waiting will give a gentle scratch at the door.

My whippet has a bell on the kitchen door that she rings when she needs to go out. I’d heard about dogs doing that but never thought one of mine would. Trouble is she often rings it just to get our attention because she’s being ignored; usually when I’ve sat down to watch something on the tv.Mind you, she also taps us on the leg sometimes as well. However that’s because she’s nearly seven. For the first few months of her life I thought she would never stop weeing in the house. We also notice her behaviour pattern: she sort of wanders around aimlessly She’s never allowed in the garden on her own so coming back in isn’t a problem.

I've never heard of dogy door bells! The things I'm learning!
It seems from what you are all saying is, it's partly some training and also down to watching their behaviour?

I never used to close the back door on my dog, even in winter.
I did once make the mistake of thinking she’d come back in until I heard her barking.
As my DGD would say…She was FUMING! 😂

My cat comes to find me even if I am upstairs ! She stares at me makes a loud miaow then shoots off towards the door and waits for the door to bre opened. No cat flaps here! I am sure your puppy will soon train you to let you know when she wants something .

I bought the door bell when my daughter had a miniature schnauzer puppy but she gave it me back because her puppy just kept ringing it for attention ( I’m currently looking after that dog 7 years later; not being my dog I don’t know her behaviour patterns. Last night I took her into the garden for a wee; she has to be on lead late at night as she’ll disappear into the bushes and, being a schnauzer is prone to barking. A short while later, after giving her her night time biscuit she went and stood at the door again…I really wanted to go to bed myself but I took her out again and she did actually need a poo bless her). When I’m at my partners when he takes her out last thing at night he has always said ‘wee and a poo Winnie’ and she does. It’s amazing how many words dogs understand. The good thing about the bell is that, if you’re staying away from home the dog can still use it to communicate with you. Having said that she does use it if she thinks I’ve forgotten treat time. She has certain treats at certain times of day and, even if she’s fast asleep she’ll wake up at 3pm for a Bonio!
