A lot of dog owners deal with this, and honestly it usually comes down to comfort and habit. If your dog is sleeping on your bed, it’s often because they feel safe and close to you there—but it can also become a routine that’s hard to break later.

One simple way to manage this is by introducing a comfortable dog bed in a quiet, cozy spot near your sleeping area. Dogs don’t usually move away from your presence—they just want comfort and security—so placing a well-cushioned dog bed close to your bed can be a good compromise.

When choosing a dog bed, go for something supportive and soft, especially if your dog is used to sleeping on a mattress. Orthopedic or memory foam dog beds work really well because they provide similar comfort and encourage your dog to use their own space instead.

Consistency is key too. Gently guiding your dog back to their dog bed at night and rewarding them when they stay there can help build a new routine over time.

In the end, it’s not just about stopping the behavihttps://www.pet-empire.eu/or—it’s about making the dog bed more appealing so your pet actually prefers it. Check this store

My dog sleeps on my bed and when I have my daughter's dog she does too
Up to about 3 years ago I had cats too and they all slept on my bed
I would miss my dog if I lost her ,she's good company .sometimes gets down if she gets too warm as she's a Bichon so has quite thick fur

We’ve always have Labradors and they’re too big and heavy to be on the bed during the night . They sleep downstairs but in the morning they come up and lie on the bed whilst we have a cuppa . The duvets get washed weekly .
My neighbours small dog started sleeping on her bed after her dh died . She says he’s a huge comfort.

My spaniel is show, not working type. At our training group (advanced in case yiu care 🐶) she is known as The Princess, when she comes up to my bed while I read and enjiy a cup of tea, in the winter, she’s under the duvet before I’ve got comfy.
As Royalty, she’s I no way disgusting

My 14wk old puppy sleeps on my bed. He is the sweetest and best companion. Since losing my DH in October I have had trouble sleeping. I’m definitely more relaxed with his, albeit tiny, weight beside me. I don’t allow him under the covers and have a throw on top of the duvet. I wash this every few days and change my bedding every two weeks. Helped with his potty training too as he wakes me up if he needs to go out. Luckily now he rarely has to go in the night.

Our dog always slept on the bed.
At about 10:30 pm if OH and I were still up, he would look from one to the other as if to say " it's bedtime , you know" then he would trot off to bed himself.
Pets sleeping on beds is very common as many others have said.
Our neighbours have two cats who sleep with them;
As long as it suits all relevant parties I can't see the harm and indeed I personally have never come to any harm from it.

Sago

Yes it disgusts me.

I couldn’t sleep with an animal that sniffs and licks its own and other animals arses!

As a pack animal the owner of a dog must be the pack leader, sharing your bed with a dog is giving a dog dominance.

I am a huge dog lover but not in my bed.

I have to say your first sentence, finding it disgusting, doesn’t paint you as a ā€œhuge dog loverā€ smile

No offence meant thanks

Graceless

BTW how do people find these old threads and resuscitate them?

I was just thinking the same!!

Our own dogs don’t sleep on our bed, but have beds next to us and downstairs.

However, our daughter’s mini sausages do often sleep with us, snuggled up as close as possible to us.

How and why?

Caleo

Indeed Sago, dogs do lick bottoms, and no doubt your dog would lick your bottom if required to do so.

I like that my dog is not disgusted by my natural animal smells but likes the smell of me very much. He would even tolerate the smell of cigarettes on me were I a smoker.

Bizarre response.

Our two cats sleep in my bed on two nights of the year - NYE and Bonfire Night. They have their own beds in the Utility Room and can go in the kitchen too at night.

Norah Fri 20-Mar-26 12:35:37

Ours do not sleep with us.

Our dogs have their own beds near the back door.

When I was poorly the other week my whippet just snuggled up to me on the sofa for the duration. She does that anyway but she did seem to be extra snuggly that week. I’ve never allowed previous dogs onto beds and sofas because I was working etc but this one is a Velcro dog. She’s currently at my partners for a few days and I miss having her snuggled up to me. I suppose that, when I first had dogs I had cats too and they had priority over the dogs when it came to the bed.

Iam64 Fri 20-Mar-26 12:08:46

Sago, I isn’t a sign of dominance by the dog if it’s allowed on your bed. It’s personal choice. My choice is my dogs have always been fed, slept and gone into the utility with its dog gate when visitors arrive.
My lab wasn’t allowed upstairs as a pup to protect bone development. It’s the one bit of obedience I’ve not needed to repeat. My spaniel comes up and lies on my bed when I take up my first cuppa. The lab lies at the bottom of the stairs .

I took him away recently, we shared a large studio , he climbed on the bed at night but decided he preferred his own bed and didn’t get on mine sgsin

We look after my DD's longhaired dog when she and her family go on holiday. The dog is lovely and he sleeps between her and her husband every night. The first time we looked after him she brought a cd player with her so that he wouldn't be lonely overnight inhis basket in our utility room and she was worried he'd cry and howl for company (we'd made it clear he wouldn't be sleeping on our bed). I forgot to put it on. However, when I went downstairs in the morning he was cuddled up in his basket and he slept perfectly on his own all week. The rest of the day and evening he was in our company.
I also have old blankets (from DD) to use on our settees as I don't want him to scratch the leather.
Sorry, but I've cleared up when comes out of his bottom, seen what he sniffs etc. and prefer not to have that on/in my bed. My home, my decision.

Six months isn’t THAT old confused

Caleo Fri 20-Mar-26 10:33:59

Now that loneliness is such a large problem it's is due to people's being adaptive that we can have an animal as a substitute friend who will not disapprove of us.

I've always allowed pets on the bed. The worst was a Pyrenean Mountain Dog who tried to creep up the uncarpeted stairs then hurl herself onto the bed., pinning us to the bed! My greyhounds also slept on the bed (singly!) but when I had the campervan she would inevitably push me out by bracing her legs against the wall. I miss her terribly.

I recognise there are problems sleeping with an animal that won't move over when it is asked to do so. I myself am not readily disgusted by animals ----including human animals.

However it's interesting that some Grans feel viscerally "disgusted" and I wonder why they have such very strong reactions. Please would those Grans tell me if they are readily disgusted in other ways.

sodapop Fri 20-Mar-26 09:09:21

I don't have a problem with dogs sleeping on the bed, personally it makes me too hot. I prefer to have the bed to myself. My dogs have a daybed in my bedroom.

Witzend Fri 20-Mar-26 09:06:56

Our last dog (long gone now, ā¤ļøšŸ¶) almost always did. Luckily we had a nice big bed. When she got old and couldn’t manage to jump up any more (bed is fairly high) I’d lift her up.

TBH I didn’t give a monkey’s what anyone else thought. I wasn’t expecting any disapproving types to sleep in that bed, though TBH I have never had the sort of (real) friends who’d have disapproved.

yogitree Fri 20-Mar-26 09:01:35

Ours has a couch, an armchair, a bed in the living room, and an orthopaedic bed in the bedroom. She takes her choices and doesn't like to sleep on our bed.
