Dont gve up Pompa - your work is lovely.! There are lots of different styles and media - maybe you should explore something else to gain inspiration, I've been trying my ipad app and it is quite addictive.

Greyduster Thu 12-Feb-15 04:41:42

I agree with Rockgran, Pompa; don't give up. I loved the picture you put up here and wish I could find that lovely fluid style you have. My paintings have a tendency to be a bit too 'hard edged'. I only ever produced one decent pastel. It's a great medium, but I decided it wasn't for me, though I still keep some. If you do use pastels, keep some ground rice in a tin and when they start to look a bit grubby, put them in the tin and give them a shake. Cleans them up a treat!

I also agree, pompa. Your picture has a lovely, dream like quality about it. I think it's lovely.

Humbertbear, love your buildings - they were on a tv programme the other day and I recognised then from your painting!
Also love your boats, Greyduster - a seascape is always difficult with rolling waves.
Can we see some more?

Greyduster Thu 12-Feb-15 12:33:28

I tried to download my pastel effort, but for some reason it didn't happen. I will give it another go.

Greyduster Thu 12-Feb-15 12:36:19

Aha! It was done on tinted Ingres apart which I hoped would give it a bit more depth, but I gave up on the tinted paper and the pastels at the same time. It is a picture of the River Don where it flows over a wier in Sheffield city centre. The old brewery on the left and the pub on the right have now given way to smart riverside apartments and offices.

Lovely work greyduster.

Has anyone seen the iPad paintings that David Hockney has done? They are remarkable.

rockgran Thu 12-Feb-15 15:52:49

That's lovely Greyduster - great reflections. I find pastels quite challenging.

I've seen the David Hockney iPad paintings (online) but I think there are now better examples about as the apps improve. (just google 'iPad art')
He did pioneer the art form and gave it some credence. It may be more acceptable now - I'm sure many of the great masters would have embraced it if they'd had the chance. Most notable artists were keen to try new concepts and media. Anyway it makes a change from scrabble!

Getting the hang of this iPad art now! Cant leave it alone!

Greyduster Fri 13-Feb-15 15:23:54

Gosh! I really like that. Very contemporary! Let's see some more.

rockgran Fri 13-Feb-15 16:44:12

Thanks, Greyduster - go on, have a go!

Just seen this free video being offered by Matthew Palmer on the first part of his iPad Art course.

If anyone fancies trying it......

Greyduster Fri 13-Feb-15 19:09:20

Watched that! I can see why you're hooked! It's remarkable.

Greyduster Mon 23-Feb-15 20:25:04

Had a bit of fun with iPad art app (very addictive)! This one is for Pompa - for the first wild brown of the season from an upland tarn! Bliss!

rockgran Tue 24-Feb-15 08:49:02

Thats great, Greyduster. Glad you are enjoying it. I was awawy this weekend and it is very good for artwork on the move.

Greyduster Tue 24-Feb-15 09:14:39

That's a stunning picture, Rockgran - I'm envious. You've really got to grips with this digital thing! I'll keep plugging away.

Is anyone watching The Big Painting Challenge on BBC1 on Sundays? It brings back memories of Watercolour Challenge, which I used to love. I am useless at art, but am enjoying all your wonderful efforts.

Mishap Tue 24-Feb-15 09:42:01

I did watch the programme and am recording it for my DD - I was intrigued by their very diverse styles and the useful comments by the experts.

My only gripe with the programme was the competitive element and that nonsense format where one person gets ditched each week - it is becoming boringly formulaic. I was also deeply puzzled by the fact that at least 3 of the participants had very little skill, considering that they picked 10 people out of thousands of entrants. I am tempted to think they deliberately picked them to give the show its competitive element and it feels rather set up.

However I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be watching every week. I will go and make a cup of tea when they get to the "The person who will be leaving this week is (holding breath) .......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Fred Bloggs"!! Cue tears and hugs.

Splendid art on here from Gnetters. When I have a moment I will put up some of my art photography.

Pompa - do NOT give up!!! I loved your painting.

Greyduster Tue 24-Feb-15 10:12:36

I agree; I too thought it felt rather set up. I didn't like the lady judge; she looks like the sort who might rap you across the knuckles with a mahl stick for turning out dodgy efforts (mine would be red raw!). Some of her comments were blunt to say the least, and I thought she had it in for the poor bloke with the beard from the start. I'm surprised he managed to make it into next week!

Maybe it's 'Art'? A sort of freeform prose? grin

Love the digital art.

rockgran Tue 24-Feb-15 11:55:33

No,I think it is spam.

rockgran Tue 24-Feb-15 11:57:40

Thanks, Greyduster - I think that boat is terrific. I have only really done rather hazy scenery so far. I did try a flower but haven't got to grips with the detail yet.
