Elegran There was something similar on one of Rip off Briton type programmes a while ago where a chap just couldn't stop the payments I think it was an American Company he had awful trouble and lost a lot of money, good job you are on your toe's.

Elegran Sat 30-Mar-13 10:49:15

Not quite on my toes, if I had been I would have checked them before jumping in. I am now wondering what to do next. I can't leave my current account permanently empty. If I do I have to change all the standing orders and direct debits.

This happened to me with a firm called Juvene, exactly the same thing - free sample and unless you cancel they'll send you a bottle every month. The trouble was, they wouldn't acccept my cancellation and eventually I had to go to my bank and admit what an idiot I'd been! They were wonderful, changed my bank card and sent the firm a letter of notice that they couldn't take any more from my account, and I haven't had any trouble since.

I didn't read the T&C until too late either - let that be a warning to others! When I googled the firm, it was the same story as in Elegran's case - there seem to be quite a lot of unscrupulous firms selling 'beauty products' in this way.

Don't know whether anyone is interested but Estée Lauder is not an ethical company.

Movedalot Sat 30-Mar-13 11:48:49

Well no surprise to me that L'Oreal, which is half owned by Nestle, is in the list which tests directly on animals. I have known for years what drives that company which is why I boycott them. sad

Elegran DH was caught by a simlar scam and they took £95 from his account. He thought I might like to try the product. When he called the bank they knew all about it and have assured him this company will not be allowed to take any more money from him. It is of course quite legal for them to do this so always read the T & Cs and if it looks too good to be true it is.

Good for you Moved we can each only do our little bit. I am so sad because Estée Lauder also owns many other companies including Bobbi Brown which I used to love. It's very difficult to find any ethical cosmetic companies at all nowadays.

Coming back to the night serum we tested. I discovered yesterday that, in spite of it's name, it should be used mornings as well! Or so says the assistant at the Estee Lauder counter when I went in yesterday to a department store! No idea why they didn't tell us that!
Anyway, I'm still using mine, just at night though up to now, so it lasts quite a long time, nearly 2 months now.
I had no idea Estee Lauder was not an ethical company...just a big conglomerate in it for the money! But I did see in today's paper that Estee's son is leaving a huge legacy of art by Picasso, Braque and others to the Met in New York. So at least some of the monetary gains are being given back to the public. We older users should be given free access, as we in effect paid for them!
Over to you all!

Elegran, I have banished the ads on Jigidi by installing Adblock+, so haven't been tempted.

That sounds useful, anno

Update on the Collagenta "testers wanted" scam. (Rather long, sorry)

First thing I did was to log into the account they had so kindly set up for me, using the password that was in the dispatch email they had sent - not my choice to set up this account. Had I not read of how they operated I might have thought that the account would just mention the test sample they were sending me and the postage for that, and not looked at it.

There were several tabs, all of which I inspected. One was for repeat orders. There were buttons to choose how often to repeat the order, and - surprise surprise - the default was Monthly! Had I not changed that to Never I would be receiving a package and losing money from my bank A/C every month.

Next move - I emailed them to cancel my order. Tessa replied that she had tried to cancel it, but it had been despatched. She would, however, let me have it for half price if I kept it. If I was not completely satisfied, I could return it to reach them within a month.

Then I visited my bank, and opened a new current account, and arranged to have the old one closed as soon as I could inform my pension payers of the new A/C number. Luckily the direct debits could be transferred there and then by the bank, I did not have to set all of those up again.

Went home to wait for my package. It arrived next day. I had a look at the outsides of the items but did not open them - they are going back untouched.

Then investigated online the cost of returning them - to Israel! Parcelforce is over £36! and you should put the phone number of the recipient on the outside. Could not find their phone number anywhere! Tried again calling it a package not a parcel - nearly £10 airmail. That now seemed a bargain. Printed off customs label and fixed it to the package and scanned the whole thing for a record. Posted it off with proof of postage (scanned that too)

Emailed them to say it was posted and should reach them within the month, attaching copies of proof of posting and address/customs label. added that I had changed the default repeat order in my account, so I did not expect any more consignments, and I had changed my account so if any did arrive, they would not be paid for them, and I did not intend to return any unwanted goods either.

This morning, received a reply, saying I had sent them a blank email, and if I was trying to contact them to try again!!! Have repeated my email and attachments.

Watch this space.

Elegran Thu 18-Apr-13 18:50:15

Next day - another reply to say that I had sent them a blank email and should email returns department. Replied advising them that they should suggest to the Collagenta office that they have their emailing facility overhauled as it must be losing them a lot of busines, unless of course it was only messages about returns that were affected.

Copied original email to them at returns. I wonder if their email system is affected too ? (heavy sarcasm)

Elegran Sun 21-Apr-13 12:04:51

At last - returns department thanks me for my proof of posting and says no more money will be taken from my account.

If you get caught by this -

Email them immediately to cancel your order.

Go to the account they have quietly set up for you and tick the right box in the page for re-stocking.

If the package "has already been despatched" and you have signed that you have received it, put on another address label and customs declaration (you can find this online and print it) and scan the package with the address label and filled-in customs declaration on it.

Take it into a post office and send it as a package (not parcel) which will cost you under £10. GET A PROOF OF POSTAGE and scan that as soon as you get home.

Email their returns department ([email protected] or maybe [email protected] - they are all one lot) attaching the copies of the scans.
