Accordion ding to my orthopaedic surgeon his sho's today don't know anatomy! They are not taught it any more.
We both attended Birmingham medical school, and can't believe what students are not taught today.
Modern GPs are accountants and administrators.
They go by biochemistry rather how people function!

Just thinking about porn, I once watched what I thought was a porn film. It was a rude version of Cinderella, mainly sung so I suppose it was an operetta of sorts. I thought it was really really pornographic (and funny) but I was told it was at the very worst, soft porn, and probably just an x film. It was a video someone at my husband's work had lent him.

When I was 14 the cycling club I belonged to got hold of a 'blue film' as they were called then and my older brothers arranged to go see it. Full of adolescent hormones and curiosity, I was determined to see it, but no way did I manage it - the adults rightly ensured no kids got to see it. And this is the problem nowadays. Kids do see porn - much worse than that Cinderella film - and it is bad for them. I admit I remained pretty innocent for a long time, in fact for years I thought oral sex meant talking dirty, and wondered why, when we were doing counting in French at school, all the boys fell over laughing at 69. But being naive is harmless, seeing hard core stuff when you are too young is not a good thing.

Adults - porn does little harm unless it becomes an obsession, or they deviate to the illegal and nasty, imho.

You're right Faye, and they make assumptions about what we want them to talk about. That old habit of men sexualising what women are discussing can be irritating.

Without going into too much detail, we once acquired a large selection of 'Mens' magazine (collecting newspapers at the time), and my husband and I sat up in bed looking through these - just wondering 'HOW'?, and laughing (we did not try!). Going on from that, however, we did sober up, and thought about the sad lives the people who live in the pornographic world must have, and with that the magazines were duly disposed of.

A few years ago, I'd mentioned to my granddaughter that I'd love to see that film with Jodie Foster in, where she loses her daughter on an aeroplane journey (can't remember the name of the film). My granddaughter, who was about 14 at the time, said she knew how to download films onto the computer, so she did this for me, and told me that it would probably take all night to download, and as my (very ancient) computer was in the bedroom at that time, we had to put up with it groaning and huffing away (oh dear !) all night. The next afternoon, I settled myself with a cup of tea and the cat on my knee, to watch the film. ! - the film that had been downloaded was pornographic! . I hasten to add that I didn't watch it, but phoned my computer saviour 'G', who told me that this sometimes happens with films downloaded through 'Limewire'.....I managed to delete it, but when the rest of the family (and associated friends) found out, they thought it very, very funny!

jeni - we know Birmingham med school well - OH was there and I was at the uni, then did my hospital social work training placement at the QE. Were you around when, overnight, the med school students concreted a toilet to the steps of the med school? - tsk, tsk!

Went back recently - the place is unrecognisable!

We watched he Young Doctors TV prog on BBC3 recently and my OH was hopping up and down at the SHOs who had never done stitching or taking blood and were practicing on the poor sick patients - he was hopping up and down saying things like "We were doing that in our third year! We would never have been let loose on the wards until we could do that!" etc.

My daughter's lovely new boyfriend emailed her some photos of a recent wedding he had been best man at. She shouted me into the study to look at what had downloaded, and was in fits of laughter. She opened the first page and there was her boyfriend, making his speech and looking very smart, then all of a sudden it was superimposed by a most explicit picture of two men having what looked like rough sex. We both put our hands over the screen (what for? to protect each other?) and quickly closed the email.

Her boyfriend was horrified - he was keen to present his best side to the potential MIL he now affectionately calls 'the dragon.' Turned out a virus/trojan? had infected his files and that of a number of his friends, one of whom was notorious for downloading internet porn.

He was ribbed about it for months. There must be many people whose computers have been mucked up because of these images that can infiltrate their security when they go on dodgy porn sites.

mishap I qualified in 1968. That was the time a small car was put on the roof of the QE, it wouldn't go into the lift to come down! It ended up in the fishpond between the hospital and med school. Prof Hubble was dean and B T Davies who had been in my fathers year sub dean.

jeni - OH qualified in 1973, so he was trailing behind you a bit. His was the first year to do "continuous assessment" which as far as I could see meant continuous exams! - it was very stressful.

Here's a bit of 2012 clinical GP practice: friend goes into nearby practice with huge throbbing pus-laden swollen finger. GP gives a prescription for antibiotics and a bag with kit to take home for lancing the finger. Friend says - "I would rather you did it please." GP sighs and reluctantly does it, then dismisses patient with dripping, bleeding finger. Friend says - "Could I have a plaster or a dressing" GP says - "I'm not a nurse you know!"

Was that the same year as Gordon Bannister?

Jeni The idea for putting a car on the roof must have come to them from Edinburgh. Engineering students (aided I suspect by members of the mountaineering club) put a car on a balcony above the entrance to the Old Quad. That was before 1968 - must have been about 1960.

It was done in my fathers time just after the QE was built. About 1942 I think.

My lovely missus and I, often have a hug and a kiss each day - spontaneously! We have a cuddle in bed before turning for sleep each night. I no longer touch her sexually, as she has been "off"it for a number of years!
Our love is very strong and we have faced many trial and tribulations, including sickness, family break ups and false accusations against a close member of the family!
Happily the family problems are nearing a happier ending, with two re-arranged marriages within the next couple of years!
The thing most worrying for me luvly missus is my Parkinson's, making life at 80 a little uncertain!
It ain't "Parky" wot kills yer, but wotever your weakness is!
