Does sex really keep your mind sharp?

Just read an article in the Guardian about how sex may help to keep your brain active. I find my memory is getting worse as I get older - more like a sieve everyday in fact - and I have to admit that sex is a rarity for me these days. That's not to say that I'm not satisfied (I'm in a very happy marriage), but I wonder if there's something to this. Does anyone find that sex helps them mentally - or is it more about being satisfied and happy than improving cognitive functions? Thanks in advance smile

Article is here if anyone wants to read www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/jul/10/does-having-sex-when-you-are-older-help-you-stay-mentally-sharp

My answer to the OP "Sorry, it's so long since I had sex I can't remember"

Mr P made the fatal mistake of asking me what I would like for my birthday next month, let's just say one of the things on my wish list is free.......and doesn't necessarily need gift wrapping!

Regular sex may well be good for us but I don't think being celibate means dementia is inevitable! I won't be resorting to hanging about on street corners any time soon! ?

Charleygirl Mon 10-Jul-17 22:21:47

lizzy hanging around on street corners at our age is not good for our joints- we need to keep moving.

I liked to smoke after sex but I have had the same packet of fags since 1986 so that's says it all for me.

Is just thinking about it a form of mental work out.

I'm thinking now ? ? ? ? ?

No I don't feel any smarter. grin

I think it has something to do with living in a relationship - especially if you live together and not just dating - the benefits of sharing a happy life with someone (probably would be happy if you're having regular sex) are what keep people alert, engaged, forward looking and positive, all good for a healthy older life.

Isn't there some evidence that married men live longer than single men but single women live longer than married ones?
