My DS says I'm old and eccentric

My DS has been to visit me this weekend, DiL being away working.
The weather is really cold and I'm wearing a thermal vest, cotton roll-neck and a really thick cardie. also thick socks and tights under a warm skirt. The central heating is on and I'm not cold.
DS arrived wearing a t-shirt and a thin jumper more suitable imo for a warmish day in April. I have still got one jumper which belonged to his father, my deceased DH, which I offered him but he declined.
He said I should be heating the house more and that it would "make me happier" if I did.
I said that I was fine with the heating, plus gas fir if required, since I do wear suitable clothes for the season.
He said "Mummy, you are old and eccentric."
In truth, I think he's the eccentric one.

I have always considered myself rather ‘strange’! I tell my children so. I like my own company, am passionate about a great many topics ((I love to read), I have become accustomed to ‘strange ‘ habits ( I also keep snug indoors with layers rather than having the heating on too high), I live alone so rarely cook unless people are here. I don’t need close friends but am happy with my acquaintances in the community work I do. My children tell me to get out more, to socialise, to even try online dating (NEVER going to happen!). I am content with myself, my family and my own ‘strange’ ways. I’m 66 and please myself. And it pleases me to be strange/eccentric!

“More money than sense” comes to mind, most of us are aware
of the cost of everything.

If one of my adult sons called me Mummy I would think they were the eccentric one! 😀

Pippa22 Mon 23-Jan-23 16:27:40

You don’t sound either old or eccentric to me and your son should be pleased that you are looking after yourself and being sensible even though you are so old !!!!

I would say that your boy is a bit eccentric calling you Mummy as an adult.

Crikey HowVeryDareYou are you not worried about the cost of having your heating on all day

4allweknow Mon 23-Jan-23 16:46:25

Depends on the temp where you are living and your finances in the current circumstances. My heating is not on all day, couple of two hour sessions between 8 am and 4 pm. From 6 pm on for 4 hours, thermostat at 21°C. If I had it on all day the bill would be horrendous. I too have several layers on top and thermal leggings under my trouser. Outside today it's quite a bit warmer at 8°C!. The shorts and tee shirt brigade could be one of those who just do not know how to or are not prepared to make savings on anything, their life must go on without compromise.

Llizzie2
Your information on hyperthermia and exercise is wrong.
When had hyperthermia I had been tarring the inside of a steel barge all day.

I have a cotton cami on a tee-shirt and primarks version of a Oodie which is great, tracksuit bottoms and booty slippers. Also I have a electric throw from octopus which is so toasty and warm. I haven't had the heating on all day till hubby came home.

Lilyflower Mon 23-Jan-23 17:15:59

It’s four degrees outside and I have Reynaud’s Syndrome so the blood doesn’t get to my fingers and toes in extreme cold. I have a vest, jumper, cardigan, jeans, tights and socks on. Actually, I’ve taken my jeans off to get under my 13.5 tog duvet with a hot water bottle to warm my feet up. If that’s eccentric, sobeit. Better silly than chilly.

Tell your DS, if he makes such comments again, that if he pays the heating bills you'll warm the house to his requirements.

This is the solution, quite simple.

I must say I think he is unusual because generally younger people seem to feel the cold less, and generally care more about the environment

I've just been to stay with family, they have the heating OFF all day. 41 yr old DS wears T shirt and thin jumper, the kids, well, less. It was too cold for me!

But they do have a few of theose nice electric blankets that you can cuddle round you for sitting down.

Thats the other option - get one for when DS is lounging around. Nice to have, anyway.

I have the heating on 18 degrees in the day and 19 in the evening and that's fine. 2 thermal layers, a jumper, trousers and lovely big furry bootees over furry socks.

I dont turn my heating on …as can’t afford it now! So I live in my back room with a small electric heater.I run into kitchen to make tea ….grab food….and fill hot water bottle ! Then I go to bed when it drops below 15* downstairs! Usually about 7 pm.
I didn’t think my poor husband being properly cared for in an Alzheimer’s home would cost me so much of my own comfort ….but it has ! A poster just said they have their heating on 11 hours a day! How wonderful that must be. I’ve forgotten what it feels like to walk around my home in comfort!

Iam64 Mon 23-Jan-23 18:30:48

Lilyflower I have Reynaud’s and I’m lighting the woodburner at 5pm every evening. Being cold when your hands feet and nose lose the ability to move and hurt is no fun

GreenGran78 Mon 23-Jan-23 18:31:27

I've been in and out of the house for most of the day, so my heating wasn't switched on until 4pm. It was on for two hours, but I then turned it off as I'm going out again to choir practice. Now that energy's so expensive I am heating the person, not the house. Layers of clothing, my heated throw and a hand knitted blanket over my knees keeps me cosy without the heating on, for most of the day, and I'm 83. I do turn it on if I feel cold, but I'm not using nearly as much power as I used to do.
If that's being eccentric, then it's 'money in the Bank' eccentric.

Buffy Mon 23-Jan-23 19:07:09

As he doesn’t live with you the temperature you keep the house has only to suit you. No one else.

Gwenisgreat1 Mon 23-Jan-23 19:57:32

What's wrong with eccentricity? It's just thinking originally!

Barmeyoldbat Mon 23-Jan-23 20:04:46

I have seen during the last few days when the outside is white with frost and ice a couple of men wearing shorts outside, they are not in running or cycling gear, just bog standard shorts. Now that’s what I call eccentric. Me, I often wear my woolly hat indoors as well as all my layers and heating on but I would never wear shorts in this weather.

For me and my cold feet, the best thing is wool socks (not cotton). If my feet and hands are warm I feel the chill less.

Another way to stay warm is burning dry wood. We have wood all over our property, cut, stack, wait for the moisture to dry out.

The best thing for cold legs and feet in the evenings is a heat pad and a couple of cushions. You will feet warm as toast while watching TV. Just look on Amazon under 'heat pads'.

Thank you.

Wool socks and slippers, the fireplaces roaring have worked thus far, but if the temperature drops I shall check that out.

HowVeryDareYou Heating on all day is great if you can afford it. I wear 3 layers, a scarf and sometimes a coat. 15 degrees is unbearable without layered clothing. Heating all day not an option. Am still working from home, sitting at computer, so this only adds to problem.

CleoPanda Mon 23-Jan-23 20:19:15

To the OP. You are dressed perfectly. You’re completely sane. Anyone wearing summer clothes, compensating by turning up the heat/leaving on all day and wasting precious energy as a result is the bonkers one and a bad citizen to boot.

AreWeThereYet Mon 23-Jan-23 20:52:34

Eccentric to me is people who pay good money for clothes to keep them warm but then prefer to pay for heating rather than wear the clothes they've bought.

Musicgirl Mon 23-Jan-23 21:23:03

You are dressed in a similar way to me, except I have tights under trousers as well as thick socks. When I am sitting in my chair, I have a hot water bottle. It is the middle of winter and struggling to reach freezing outside. What on earth is eccentric about this? Our generations have a lifetime of experience different weather conditions and know how to dress accordingly. I am a couple of years younger than you and we are definitely not old. Late middle age perhaps.

Just come back from a weekend away and we didn’t leave the heating on. The house was 44C. The smart meter was showing just over £1 at 3.30pm when we arrived home which was interesting because the only energy which had been used was electric powered things on standby. (Obviously the weekly display starts on Monday). Turned the heating on full at 4pm and by 10pm the house temperature was 60C but the meter was showing more than £10. Scary! 3 hot water bottles in the bed have warmed it up sufficiently.

singingnutty Mon 23-Jan-23 23:41:48

Corrections in order- should have said 44F and 60F!

I feel the cold badly and our apartment inside a detached house is ice cold. We reckon because no fitted carpet. Am I eccentric? Hope so. Entrepreneurs usually are. I remember starting a business in Benidorm. Hiring baby car seats and cots to holiday makers. I was working as a speed typist at the local newspaper entitling me to free advertising. I immediately got orders from local estate agents to put together baby cots in their holiday lets. I couldn’t cope with it all as I’m hopeless at DIY and OH thought I had lost the plot. Happy to be called eccentric. It’s a compliment and I am still entrepreneurial on eBay.

my grandson often tells me that I am weird but cool.
